ok....i got a multitude of problems, but i guess i can go one at a time....

First off, I'm trying to install WineX, but am getting absolutely nowhere. I was given a link, Text to follow instructions, and i now realize i dont have all these packages installed. is there an easy way to get all these packages and/or install them? are they necessary?

To install packages..

Start " Suse " lizard..

System

YaST

And then install packages from there?

Not on my laptop so I can't give you the exact location.

Are you installing a premade WineX package that you paid for or are you trying to compile the CVS code? If you're using a premade package, none of those -devel packages are necessary. If you're trying to compile the CVS and you don't know how to use the package manager, you've got bigger problems ahead of you. Buck up and pay the $15 - it'll at least get you some support when your game doesn't work (which is nearly always the case, at least at first). Besides which, the CVS code is missing some pretty important components due to patent restrictions - you're not likely to get much out of it anyway.

Kopete handles AIM and MSN.

And nobody's going to help you. You obviously haven't read much, give no specifics about your kernel, hardware, etc.

"???" indeed.

However, I certainly can't blame you for enthusiastically jumping into things.

Make is a development tool for scripting the compiling of a package.

hmm.....interesting....

but i still havent solved my problem....

bersl2, can i assume you were confused by my question?? in that case, let me rephrase.

I have a video driver, more specifically this one. i tried to ./install.sh it, but after i hit the enter to continue button, it tells me that it only works with kernel 4.2, which i also got from this site. here is the specific text...
Kernel Modules

You can download the Linux kernel modules for XFree86 4.2.x at [WWW]http://www.xfree86.org/~alanh.

Note that the binary modules only work against a 2.4 kernel; 2.6 users will have to build their own.

Linux kernel modules for subsequent versions of XFree86 can be found in the XFree86 source tree in the directory xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/drm

now, i downloaded kernal 4.2, and it has a Makefile.Linux file in it, which means i have to "make -f Makefile.Linux all", but the make package is not installed on my system. Now, I found a make package and downloaded it, but when i click on "install with YaST," it just opens yast and then quickly closes it, no install occuring.

You can find help some places, but this attitude is prevalent in open source circles in my experience.

It's sounds like you are invested in suse but I think it's best to start with a nitty-gritty distro like slackware, gentoo, or even debian. Why? Because you will learn things just getting the system started that will pay off when you try to do things like use winex. As far as I can tell, NO oss distros are problem-free. The hand-holding distros can give you trouble at the point a problem pops up because you won't have the tools to fix the problem yourself or find help. What are the tools? In my experience, mainly research. Keeping an OSS system up to date requires finding solutions most of the time in newsgroups, mailing lists, and IRC (with lots of care because IRC folks can be jerks).

I think most oss users are more than willing to help, linuxquestions.org for example, but only help those who help themselves. I'm a newb to Linux too, but asking for help is usually preceded by many other investigations.

Yeesh... a guy asks a question and everyone goes off on philosophical tangents.

That being said... zayened, you do need to learn to ask better questions. Your more recent posts are providing some specific info - that's good. But you need to give some more background information if you expect useful help. See below...

1) We can't see that page - it's members-only. 2) Any video drivers for Linux should almost certainly be taken from the manufacturer's web site. Which brings us to an important question - what kind of video card do you have?
i tried to ./install.sh it, but after i hit the enter to continue button, it tells me that it only works with kernel 4.2...
That's not a kernel version - the current common kernels are 2.4 and 2.6. 4.2 is an X11 version (X11=graphics subsystem). 4.2 is somewhat old at this point. The fact that your download is using anything from X4.2 suggests that the driver may be outdated. Tell us what kind of card you have and we'll tell you where to look.
which i also got from this site. here is the specific text...

I highly doubt that any of this should be necessary. But again, without knowing your hardware, it's hard to tell.

As above, I really doubt this should be necessary. However, if you wanted to install a package like make, you would need to find an RPM either on your CD's or from SuSe's site. If YaST doesn't seem to do anything, put the file in your home directory, open a terminal, su to root, and do an rpm -Uvh make.blah-blah-blah.rpm

To summarize, in your next post please state your video card, including manufacturer, model number, chipset (if you know it), and interface (PCI, AGP, etc.)

my video card is an onboard (laptop) radeon 7500. it is a panasonic toughbook, and they dont have linux drivers on their site. i was directed to these drivers that i posted above because they are radeon mobile drivers for linux. i will try terminaling the rpm -Uvh make.blah.rpm and will let you know how it goes!

and sorry about my n00bness with the first couple posts, but this is my first time actually getting past the installation of any linux distro (because SUSE did it all for me)!!

The sad thing is that with your wild enthusiasm, I can see that very soon you're gonna become another linux refugee. That is, you'll give up on setting up drivers, kernel modules, finding packages, compiling and installing stuff. You're going about it in the wrong way, increasing the complexity of your tasks exponentially, that's it's almost a certainty you'll bite more than you can chew. You were probably emboldened by having an easy install and think you can just download and figure out everything with a few clicks. My suggestion is to start from a sound base - do a full installation and make sure all your hardware devices are working first, including networking, video, sound, usb drives, etc. Get the latest updates for your system, including the latest kernel, X-windows, security patches and device driver updates. Again make sure everything is working. Then try installing a few binary (pre-compiled) packages - get used to the package manager and how it handles package dependencies. For example, install your favorite web browser and mail program, or some desktop gadgets. Then install development tools, including gcc and make. Then try to download, compile and install a source package of some open source application (a small simple one to start with) by following the instruction. Only after your comfortable with the above should you attempt to use Wine. I recommend you use Ubuntu Hoary distribution as it's very up to date, has great package management, very good hardware detection, and works out of the box, while letting you customize and install extra software easily.
