I've been to many (100+ I shit u not) Japanese restaurants & if you REALLY want to help your parents, find music that's in sync with the rest of the place. For example, if it's a brightly lit restaurant with clean, well defined lines ... don't play jazz, play modern japanese pop. If it has soft lighting, wood-panel walls, play some japanese classical music. A yakitori joint that I went into was playing old school video game music and they pulled it off because it matched the ambiance.

Kitaro. New Age stuff. mix it up with some soft 80s. some metal ballads. if it opens late, pop in some dubstep for the younger crowds. also depends on the decor of the restaurant...gotta match it.

My parents have owned a sushi restaurant for a few years and have always had awful music that was set up for them by one of the previous mangers. The music ranges from bad techno, something that resembles middle eastern prayer, and the Spanish version of the song , "I Will Survive".

I was hoping to set them up with something easier on the ears. Some sort of soothing quiet chill music to play in the background. The only problem is i don't really listen to that sort of music so i would love to hear some of your suggestions. I would prefer all the music to be just instrumentals.

If it's a fairly traditional atmosphere, just play a bunch of traditional Japanese music - but quietly enough that nobody has to raise their voices to be heard in conversation.

If it's pretty good, play some japanese instrumentals.

If it's merely okay, play some romantic-ish mood music.

If the food sucks, go for bouncy, fast-paced fun music.

Also, if the clientele is mainly japanese, ask them for suggestions.

Now I'm hungry for sushi.

Yiruma is the stage name of Lee Ru-ma (born February 15, 1978), a South Korean pianist and composer. The name "Yiruma" means accomplishment in Korean.

I think his most famous stuff is river flows in you and kiss the rain. You could also do acoustic versions of songs. Maybe focusing on asian pop songs.
