Sven Hassel

Few days ago my brother bought Sven Hassels book colection and I must say
that those are some of the best WWII books I have ever read.

Sven Hassel was a German soldier who have seen all of the WWII hell, and
described it fabulosely in his books ....

I would recommend everybody to read these books, just to get an idea what
real terror of war is .... It is not what you see in the Hollywood movies, where
10 soldiers kill half of world and free inocent women and children, and maybe
one dies, and other only have few scratches...... this is real, this is WAR !

yes his novels are just awesome..i thgh have only read one..i think its called blitzfreeze. he details raping soviet women soldiers, the attack on russia and how the war finally turned against them. he was a tank soldier and finally i think he makes it back out of russia.

Would be an interesting perspective. 3 years back I had the pleasure to spend a couple weeks in a Hospital room with a German Air Force Vet. He never saw action, as he worked as Support for a Reconnaisance Air Wing, but his stories were very touching. Part of what happened to him was realizing the pointlessness of the War while on leave in France. While on the way to his destination he and a few guys from his Unit saw a French Farmer bringing in Hay off the fields. They decided to help out and spent a few days on this Farm where the War became distant enough that he could see it for what it was.

Another incident that occured was in Norway. A Norwegian woman was doing laundry for the Germans until one day her son was killed somehow by the Germans. She was upset of course and when she told him he was devastated, as he had grown attached to her and her family. She no longer wanted anything to do with him or the rest of the Germans.

His happiest story involved he and his Danish Wife. He met her during the war and married her sometime after it. At the end of the War no one was allowed to leave/enter Germany for a period. That didn't stop them from seeing each other though, she regularly swam across a river to the German side to meet each other in secret.

Spekaing of the more obscure WWII books, I found one at my mother in laws house called Some Survived by Manny Lawton.

This guy was in the Philippines in 1941 when the Japanese attacked. Ordred to surrender in early 1942, his ordeal started with the Bataan death march. Then starvation, disease, etc followed him through a number of camps. When the U.S. troops returned he knew that freedom was close, but ended up being shipped to Japan before he could be freed. During that trip most of the transport ships were bombed or torpedoed. Not to mention the Japanese stopped feeding them on the way to Japan. Its amazing how any of these p.o.w's survived.
