I am aware that certain sound cards have the ability to assign certain functions to certain jacks, so that e.g. one jack may be made to function as either a mic in or a line out. I wonder if there is software that can do this for every card (I doubt it), or at least for my onboard "Crystal WDM AC 97 driver for ICH4" sound card.
The line out jack of a 5 year old laptop of mine just farked up. You have to fiddle with it to get sound. (The internal speakers work fine.) It's a shame because the (ultraportable) beast is still humming along just fine!
