I just tried to sell a phone on Swappa for the first time. It was a refurb that was sealed, they wanted me to open the seal to take close ups of the device. I said I didn't want to do that and asked how they handle new-in-box items, because its a similar scenario. They blocked my account and said I'm rude for asking.

I suppose I'll go back to eBay, them.

I'll say this: personally, I don't see any value what-so-ever in a refurbished device being "sealed" in a box. What good is that? Who exactly values "Ohhhh it's refurbished and sealed in a box!" vs. "The seller knows what condition its in first hand, and I've seen photo proof it turns on and works okay, isn't scratched up all to hell and back, doesn't have dings and blemishes, isn't damaged, etc etc?

It may be a little harsh of them blocking your account, but I can definitely see where they wouldn't allow you to sell what's basically a 'grab bag' refub item. Maybe that flies on ebay and people hold some value to 'sealed' refurb items, but I don't see it meaning jack diddly on Swappa.

Because its an item directly from the manufacturer still in the packaging from the manufacturer - if you've opened the seal its harder to make the claim of "I haven't used this before". Maybe I did use it, but kept it in mint condition? But those aren't the same thing. Personally, I put more value in something unused vs something used but kept nice. And I realize a refurb is technically used, but at least its been corrected of any defects, its clean, etc...battery likely has been replaced, vs a potentially 1 year old phone that looks sparkly but barely holds a charge anymore, for example.

That's why I asked them about new devices - if I were selling a brand new device that I bought from the store, would they make me open it up to take pictures of it? Apparently asking that is ban-worthy. I even told them that if they answered my questions I could maybe do what they wanted, but I wanted to clarify things first...which seems to be forbidden in the Swappa world.

^ This means exactly squat with a refurb item. To sell on Swappa, no one cares about a claim of "I haven't used it." Unless it's brand new, it's used. Much more important is "I know it works, and here are photos of it turned on, the screen unblemished, the phone in the shape I say it's in, battery holding a chaarge, etc.

If you think about it for a minute, it makes more sense to push those things on a site selling used phones, than some supposed allure of a refurbished item sight unseen in a box. Personally, I'd rather just sell something than fight a needless battle over such things, but then I prefer things go smoothly!

Weird, I have seen factory replaced/refurbished items on there with only pictures of the box/information.

I don't think a photo shows the battery holding a charge more than 30 seconds, I'd argue that being manufacturer refurbished is pretty much guaranteed to have a better battery than any user phone. But I've also had dozens of Android phones over the past decade, all of which drastically lose their battery capacity after the first year, so maybe I'm just jaded - but that's why I'd buy a factory refurb over a sparkly clean but definitely used phone 100% of the time.

Hey, I'm only two days into my seven day eBay auction and the price is already nearly up to my asking price on Swappa, so higher fees aside, might just work out for the best anyway *shrug*

I've seen factory refurbished items that were little more than dusted off and returned to a box, with no though given to the cosmetic quality of the device. Again, you're lacking logic on this- you're a new person on Swappa. No one cares you have a sealed box with supposedly a good quality cell phone inside it. Your word for it, vs. visual proof isn't good enough as a first seller. The whole point of the site is to avoid the type of crap scams and minefields of garbage (no, trust me it's awesome!) from places like.. eBay.

If you had had 20 sells under your belt there, and were a well trusted seller- perhaps a different story.

I have bought and sold dozens of phones on Swappa. It is standard practice and policy to show the phone ON and WORKING. Doesn't matter if it is refurb. You have zero sales and are a new seller. Consider it like Ebay's new seller policy- Your money is on hold until the transaction is 100% completed, because until then, you are not a trusted seller.

I have been scammed almost every time lately on ebay. Many wont use it any more because of that. You were better off with Swappa.

I've seen factory refurbished phones that looked worse then the one I replaced. Last year my S7 Edge had a screen defect and tmobile swapped it out with a "Factory refurbished" one that was all scratched up. I refused the swap and had them get another. This went on 3 times until I received an acceptable one. So yeah, good for swappa for wanting pics.

Maybe your problem is T-Mobile? I've gotten a lot of warranty replacements over the years and every single one has been in like new condition.

Also, lets clarify something - I did provide pictures of the phone on and working. The box itself was not sealed, the phone was sealed inside a translucent pouch that protects it from scratches in transit. You could see that the phone turned on, held a charge, worked, and could see well enough the quality. What's especially interesting is they did not have an issue with my picture of the front / screen - they balked at the picture of the back of the phone. They were of identical quality.

Either way, their customer service is truly abysmal, which is the bigger problem here. Their policy is to require you to remove like-new phones from its protective packaging? Fine, that's their policy. Refusing to answer questions about said policy? No, that's not fine.

Ah, I misread. I thought the box was sealed. So yeah, screw swappa then. Clearly you'd want to keep the screen seal on for better sales.
