Hey everyone. X2 n00B questions for you...

I have an A64 3200+ on a Socket 939 motherboard runnin perfectly. Someone wants my chip and I can get an A64 X2 4200+ cheap. My motherboard supports X2 and is running the latest BIOS. My XP Pro is updated and current.

Question...

Can I just pop the X2 chip in and all is well?

Or is XP gonna have goofy things happen? In games and so on?

Do I have to reinstall XP to do this correctly? If not a reinstall of XP, is there a bunch of stupid reg hacks and or hot fixes that have to be done for X2 to do what it's supposed to?

What is the right course of action ?

Please let me know if you can.

C.

You're correct. You either have to reload Windows (though, occasionally, you can just repair Windows), or you have to do a half dozen registry hacks. Of course, you could just drop it in, and not do anything, but you'd then only be making use of one core, just like you have now.
Are you sure about that? I don't recall installing any fix/hack for my upgrades in the past. I had both cores functional in OS without any manipulation/reinstall. You could encounter a problem and need the fixes/hacks.

It's rather hit or miss if windows will autodetect and apply the correct HAL on it's own.

I was able to drop in an X2, install the AMD dual core driver and the dual core optimizer (from the AMD site), reboot and away i go. You can always do a reinstall of windows later if that doesn't work for you.

Just make sure your BIOS is up to date first before doing anything...

Should be a drop in replacement.

Windows should auto-detect the other CPU and it shold work fine.

I disagree iwith myocardia, you should be able to just put in the X2 and reboot. Just check under device manager that windows has installed the multiprocessor ACPI after the reboot and that's about it. If it doesn't autodetect you can do it manually without reinstalling windows. I did this plently of times with NT4.0 so I know it should work with XP.

Really easy. Start a repair install, and when Windows says:"DO NOT TURN OFF THE COMPUTER!", turn it off. Open it up, change the proc, start it back up and do a repair install. After that, dual core patch and go on your merry way .

I just recently replaced my 3700+ SD with a X2 4800+ Toledo, and had the same exact question as you did.

A few folks here pointed me to this thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=81429

If you would rather not reformat, I reccomend you follow the instructions on that thread.

I went ahead and reformated and the system runs great, definately worth the 280.00, ans saved me from spending close to a grand on my "wanted" conroe build.

It should work. A friend of mine upgraded a 3200+ to 4600+ x2.
All what needed to be done was to instal the amd dual core driver and it all worked fine.
