I saw SWAT being promoted at Redbox the other day. Why is a 7 year old movie being re-released and pimped at Redbox?

Because there isn't a whole lot of good stuff out recently, and they can probably pick up those old movies really cheap to rent out and hope somebody keeps it.

I suspect that his complaint is that Redbox is known (afaik) as an outlet exclusively dedicated to new releases. This discovery surprised him.

ROFL. that is so far from the truth. Blockbuster carried every movie that Blockbuster supported. You know where the term Un-rated comes from? (this is different from Not Rated, actually...I think?)

Blockbuster strongly believes in censorship. Fuck them, and fuck them hard.
