Good move. Guess Apple's going to have to add to its ever-expanding team of CPU architects

Actually "Jaguar Enhanced" based SOCs are launching alongside those Arm based SOCs next year .

Big cores are there too , Kaveri2.0 end of this year or Q1 next year and Carizzo (based on another big core-XC) in 2015. We just don't know what happens after 2015 but looking at the numbers AMD gets from their mainstream desktop and notebook lines (read APUs based on PD) they will have some sort of follow-up core to XC past the 2015.

did you watch the gpu14 showcase...after that I am not so sure...

to tell you the truth i didn't like it either, i thought it was poorly executed and the content was somewhat lacking but they seem to understand where they need to invest on (mobile and lower power stuff)

Yes, strange, huh... :hmm: Especially since some for the last 10-20 years have predicted they imminently should die or become an insignificant VIA clone... looks like AMD is still around ruining their party!

Stronger than ever tbh. AMD is building a semi-custom moat around itself that nobody else can touch, and from there it will launch it's next assault on the rest of the market. Everybody else should be worried, this is no Nvidia.

nvidia should go use a bunch of intel quark cores mated to kepler IP to get into windows proper...#ObviousJoke

How is this different than what nVidia is doing? I don't see it. They're going to have the same problems nVidia is having.

Desktop space yes. Mobile no.

They showed the Tegra 5 running BF3. Not bad. Now imagine the future in which Mantle actually gains traction. Desktop Space prefers AMD cards (short term) due to mantle advantage. Furthermore, developers make a push into the mobile phone gaming scene since the graphics horsepower is there for 3D games with the likes of Tegra 5 and AMD's SOC with GCN Graphics. Gamers decide "Hey, I can play BF3 on the go, that's cool" and pick up a tablet with AMD in it.

Currently would I touch AMD with someone elses money on mobile? No, I'm not that cruel. But I do see the potential for an AMD GCN enabled tablet in 2015 if Mantle pans out.

I don't know the details of AMD's console bid, nor will I try to speculate like most people but that's their ONLY surefire cash. Graphics, for some reason no matter how well they do, they can't make the same margin Nvidia does, Desktop CPU wise is really dependent on how well mantle works to close the gap between intel and AMD, and mobile really it'd take magic for them to catch up.

They have a chance, but meh there are a lot of movements they are making and one mistake and it all crumbles.

frostbite 3 on arm...maybe they simulated the performance of "tegra 5" on x86 hardware...rather than directly running bf3 on it...

Don't forget HSA.

Nvidia is free to innovate as long as it stays compatible with OpenGL and DX, while AMD will be stuck with GNC, or at least something *very* backward compatible, because they can't break Mantle.

What happens after two generations?

GCN that is DX11.2 compatible contrary to Nvidia "innovative"
DX11.0 GPUs.....

Well thats a pretty good question. Its a fragile situation for amd imho.
But put in onother perspective; it will take 1-2 years for mantle tools to be completely finished and ready. Add at least 2 years for games then.
For the next iteration amd will have learned a lot and can then release it when its more mature than now. So for the next "mantle" amd is still in a very favorable position because they can have a better product.

Its on the longer run 8-10 years where things become complicated for them. The consumer needs have changed. The market have changed. And probably they are not as sharp and on the edge as they are now. That makes them vulnerable.

Mantle is pretty much jhh strategh imho. Its bold. Agressive, risky and innovative both for technology and market. He is one of the leaders who have stand up and demanded change and pointed to opportunities in this market situation. He said it was there for them who took it. Its ironic but mantle is that. He would love that child as his own.

Its GCN, by the way. And how is an Architecture of any importance? Intel x86 has lasted how many years now?

And Mantle is just an API, which both Direct X and OpenGL are, and those have been available on the always changing architecture of GPU's.

In essence, Mantle can and will be improved and updated, if needed.
(Which makes it more likely, since its made by AMD.)

You know, like CUDA! Sheesh...

They're making a lot of PR-stunt type moves, but until they're consistently profitable and growing, it's mostly just smoke and mirrors to try to keep its stock price up as it continues to sell and lease-back property
