Those cheaper sets dont have a decoder and rely on the sound card to decode. THe more expensive ones decode for you.

<< Alright, dumb question from me:

If I have a 6 channel sound card (one of the cheap one's from MPSuperstore posted on here a while back), and I buy a 5.1 speaker set, do I get 5.1 sound when I watch a DVD? Or do I need a decoder on top of the 6 channel sound card? Or does PowerDVD decode it?

Basically, I'm trying to decide if it's worth paying more for a 5.1 speaker set or just get a 4.1 set. I have seen some 5.1 sets that appear to be sold with a decoder, but are big bucks, while some like the creative sets are cheaper, around $120.

Thanks in advance.
>>

5.1 = 6 channels .1 means subwoofer chanel. so technically if there were a 5.2 there would be two subwoofer channels.. doesn't exist of course basically now days all decent soundcards can support 5.1 and full surround speaker sets. windvd powerdvd all support the different speaker configurations/decode lfe etc.

and yea its probably worth it. and external decoder is pretty redundant now really. unless your gonna use the set with your tv for some weird reason. better to see all your money go into more speaker then waste some resources on a decoder

Yes, if your sound card is a 6 channel and has 6 "discrete" analog outputs (i.e. 3 stereo mini plugs out, 1 has left/right, one has rear left/right, one has sub/center, or 6 differant RCA plugs out, etc etc), you won't need a decoder. PowerDVD should automatically decode and display in 6 channel output. If you want to test this, try plugging your current speakers into the rear outputs and see if the sound is differant while you watch a movie There are also some dolby digital trailers availible (in .vob format) you can find to d/l some places that you can use to test 5.1 sound. Creative sets are cheaper, but they are not as good quality as the klipsch. I have a creative set, and I'm satisified with it overall, but the subwoofer needs more power, so at some point in the future I think I'll upgrade.

... oh please...

sour grapes, anyone?

Let's see: some of us are not wealthy and live in a studio apartment, and hence prefer a more inexpensive, space-saving setup.

Your comment was unwarranted and just plain stupid.

for this price you could buy 30 labtec speakers and have 30.1 surround sound. Not bad.

I bought the klipsh 2.1 about a 5 months ago, just because I don't have the room or desire to have rear channel speakers. but klipsh makes an EXCELLENT speaker... I highly recommend them

The Klipsch 5.1's are nice sounding speakers. For $375 shipped they are even better. There are other speakers that may work just fine for most folks. Unfortunately, Klipsch are expensive but they sell and as long as they do Klipsch has no reason to drop the price.

Thanks nnnyyy, nephrodite, and Devistater for your input and advice.
I would love the Klipsch set, but it's a little out of my price range...

Hey, I'm looking to buy some speakers. I wanted Klipsch but $375 is just more than I'm willing to spend right now. Are there any relatively close alternatives to these? I was thinking about the logitech z560s. Any other suggestions? Thanks guys!

<< 5.1 = 6 channels .1 means subwoofer chanel. so technically if there were a 5.2 there would be two subwoofer channels..

The .1 is there as .1 and not a full speaker because it only uses about 10% of the full sound spectrum. 5.2 would imply a subwoofer that used 20% of the sound spectrum, not 2 subwoofers.

As far as the wireless goes x10 has a very interesting solution that works pretty well for me.. Here is the info:

http://www.x10.com/products/x10_vk59a.htm

2Crucial --> I have the Midiland 7100 plus system.. it is very nice and comes with the Dolby Digital decoder. Looks like you can find them for about half the price of the Klipsch's at $180 on some of the price search engines. Here is the product link:

This seems pretty hot, as the Klipsch don't seem to go on sale very often. I have been drooling over the Promedia 2.1 setup since I listened to them and compared them to other speaker setups. I'm no audiophile, but there is a clear difference between the Klipsch and anything else....

For those of you thinking about the 5.1's, there's a good review of them vs. the Cambridge 5.1 setup here.

2Crucial, I've also heard good things about the Logitech Z-560's but have not heard them in person. Some user feedback looked like maybe they had some problems with quality control, at least in the early models. You might want to investigate some more....

Same price at Vanns.com. They have a $25 off $250 coupon that drops the price on the Klipsch 5.1's to $375, and the 4.1's to $275. Both ship free.

ya know ill probably be made fun of for this, but i recently bought a pair of $30 5.1 speakers off eb@y - i figured hey - if they completely suck im not out much money. Anyway Im actaully quite impressed by them, for what they are. They feel a little cheapie, but the sound quality is actaully pretty good. The are made by a company called eAudio, which i couldnt find any info on anywhere (and the box they came in doesnt list a website or anything), but for $30 im very happy. The sound quality and overall output seem a good deal better than my old 2.1 altec lansing set (which, when new, were in the $140 range). Anyway if your on a budget but still want 5.1 sound you should look into these.

There are a couple of other minor but none the less important changes from the Klipsch v2.400 / 4.1 to the Klipsch 5.1 ... Besides the things that were already mentioned: that you get the center channel, an the amp boost to the sub goes from 160 -> 200, and the amp has to provide an extra 60 for the center (total of 500 watts), and the Dual 8" sub (which makes a bigger difference than you'd think) ...

You also get "normal" speaker wires with banana plugs, which stops the annoying static and loose connections from the old miniplug style, the satellites are actually different than the Klipsch 4.1's which is said to have an impact on sound quality, and additionally the Klipsch 5.1 has a much more polished and professional feel to it. For example, you don't have 3 wires coming out of the back of the control pod, 2 of which go into the soundcard. You instead have 3 miniplug jacks on the back of the subwoofer, and you use the included wires to plug into your sound card (that way if you ever lose the wires, or the wires get damaged, you can easily just replace them).

Just my opinion on the Klipsch 5.1 (I happen to own a pair of the v2-400's, 4.1's and the 5.1s)... If you listen to a lot of music, watch a lot of DVDs on your PC, and care a lot about the sound quality for games ... definitely make the investment in the Klipsch 5.1s ... Once you get them, you'll never want to go back to some of the cheaper solutions. However, the Klipsch 5.1 at $399, or even $375 is not for everybody.

I respect you for buying something adaquate for that price. What make me sick is people that are hurting for money buy things way out of their price range when they'll be almost as happy buying something 1/4 as much. (ex. Buy $50-70 set and get a little less than 100 free movie rentals over Klipsch )

What about the Logitech Z560s? Is the performance over the Z560s by the Klipsch 5.1 set that much better that it really merits a $220 price difference? ($154 shipped compared to $375 shipped, both from newegg)
J/W 'cause I have a friend who's in the market for a nice computer speaker setup, and debating which one to recommend to him.

I'm still debate'n on the 4.1 or the 5.1 The 5.1 seems so expensive (over $400 including s/h). Anyone know if there's any Manf/Rebates for the 5.1 (to help absorb the sticker shock). A few weeks back Bestbuy had a $30 rebate but since then it expired.

you can't even compare the two. especially if you watch dvds and stuff. the z560's are almost as good as the klipsch 4.1's.. not the 5.1. as for the price difference, its not that much more really for what your getting. 8" dual subwoofer etc.. you can't upgrade a 4.1 system to 5.1. audio is like this you could also go with 1000 dollar speakers, or 75 dollar headphones instead

I've had these speakers since august when they just came out. (think it was august.. maybe sept) Got them for about 400 shipped at outpost.com. This price has been on newegg for a while... just didn't think 375 shipped is a hot deal for comp speakers. But I've got to say, these are the best speakers I have ever heard. These are definitely better than the logitech z560's, but then again, they are 3x more expensive. I know people with both the z560's and promedia 4.1's and im sorry to say they both sound like crap to me. I've been spoiled too long with these. But yea, if you have the money, go for it... free shipping will save you at least 25 since this thing weighs like 50 pounds. (haha... must suck for the UPS guy who had to deliver it up the flights of stairs twice cuz i wasn't home the first time). If your short, just stay with the z560's (they still give you the best bang for your buck). Spending 3x more doesn't mean it'll give you 3x the sound quality. Doesn't work that way.
