<< If I have a 6 channel sound card (one of the cheap one's from MPSuperstore posted on here a while back), and I buy a 5.1 speaker set, do I get 5.1 sound when I watch a DVD? Or do I need a decoder on top of the 6 channel sound card? Or does PowerDVD decode it?
Basically, I'm trying to decide if it's worth paying more for a 5.1 speaker set or just get a 4.1 set. I have seen some 5.1 sets that appear to be sold with a decoder, but are big bucks, while some like the creative sets are cheaper, around $120. >>
Yes, if your sound card is a 6 channel and has 6 "discrete" analog outputs (i.e. 3 stereo mini plugs out, 1 has left/right, one has rear left/right, one has sub/center, or 6 differant RCA plugs out, etc etc), you won't need a decoder. PowerDVD should automatically decode and display in 6 channel output. If you want to test this, try plugging your current speakers into the rear outputs and see if the sound is differant while you watch a movie There are also some dolby digital trailers availible (in .vob format) you can find to d/l some places that you can use to test 5.1 sound. Creative sets are cheaper, but they are not as good quality as the klipsch. I have a creative set, and I'm satisified with it overall, but the subwoofer needs more power, so at some point in the future I think I'll upgrade.
