A hunter in Alaska was hospitalized after the bear he shot rolled on top of him

Bear meat is no delicacy and hunters almost never eat it.

But that did not stop two Alaska men from going after some big game over the weekend. It didn't go well.
According to the state Department of Public Safety, the pair were hunting Saturday near Carter Lake south of Anchorage when they spied and shot a bear on a ridge above them.

The injured animal rolled down the slope, dislodging rocks along the way, straight for the two men.
One hunter, 28-year-old William McCormick, was seriously injured when he was struck by both a rock and the tumbling bear, the DPS said. His 19-year-old hunting partner was unhurt.

McCormick was rushed by helicopter to an Anchorage hospital with "life-threatening injuries," the DPS said.
State officials did not say whether the bear was killed, nor did they specify which type of bear it was.
Both hunters are in the military and stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, an Air Force and Army base near Anchorage.

According to the state Fish and Game Department, bears are "waddling fat" at this time of year as they prepare to hibernate in their dens during the winter. Mature male brown bears can weigh up to 900 lbs., while grizzlies can reach up to 1,400 lbs.

Any chance these are potential Darwin award candidates?

Gravity, it's a bear.

You don't know many hunters then. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet.

Nothing wrong with bear meat especially the backstraps... Very high in protein, high iron, and low in cholesterol for a game meat... I prefer Elk higher in protein and less fat...

The story doesnt mention if it is hunting game or regulation. There might be a good reason that bear had to go. I mean, probably not, but still, facts matter. (as someone who just got his hunting license)

Did you click that link?

You're saying that the Alaska Department of Wildlife doesn't know anything about wildlife?

"Bear hides are prized by hunters but the meat of a brown bear is generally considered unpalatable and hunters rarely eat it."

Plus hunting is a game where the other side doesn't even know they're playing.

The only time I've taken life was under orders, never for fun or to prove I'm a he man.

My general position is if you're living in a part of the country where you have to hunt for food, you're doing life in America wrong.

For animals that have very long reproductive cycles it doesn't make sense to hunt them for food. Their populations can't keep up, which I'd imagine is the case with bears. Jimbo shooting one off, whatever, but I still think it's ridiculous just for the thrill.

I have a ton more respect for hunters than the average meat eater. The average person enjoys a steak, but to them it is just a product in the store. A hunter actually has the blood on his hands, knows where his meat comes from, and harvests an animal that lived life naturally and freely.

100% idiotic for sure if that is the case! but we still dont know if, whom ever owns the right to hunt in those parts, had issued a regulation for said bear (I am translating this poorly from my native tounge, sorry). Maybe the bear was a danger to hikers or other prioritized wild life...

I'm not a hunter but don't predator numbers need to be controlled by regulated hunting? If you don't aren't you going to end up with either a bunch of starving bears or bears encroaching on areas they shouldn't? Or worse, both.

Lots of time people use fatty bear meat to mix in with very lean deer meat in sausage. Don't know of any straight bear meat fans (or gay bear meat fans either).

The bear was no danger, wasn't bothering anyone, had never attacked anyone. The bear was munching on a berry bush, and they felt like shooting sh@t. The original story is at the link.

"Alaska has an estimated 30,000 brown bears statewide. In 2007, about 1,900 brown bears were harvested in Alaska. Of that figure, about 700 were taken by Alaska residents and roughly 1,200 (or 67 percent) were taken by nonresidents. Bear hunting seasons are held in both spring and fall in some areas but only in fall in other areas. It is illegal to kill cubs and females with offspring. Nonresident brown bear hunters are required to have a guide or be accompanied by an Alaska resident who is a relative."

They were stationed there, not residents of Alaska.

"Brown bears eat a variety of foods including berries, grasses, sedges, horsetails, cow parsnips, fish, ground squirrels, and roots of many kinds of plants. Brown bears are capable predators of newborn moose and caribou, and can also kill and eat healthy adults of these species. Bears also consume garbage in human dumps, as well as all types of carrion."

Bears and vultures. Nature's garbage men, and landscapers..

Hunting for sport I don't agree with, hunting to provide food or cull numbers to prevent over-population I can agree with, such as deer. Also deer is tasty. If it's a nuisance animal, again, ok. Big game trophy hunting should be banned, IMO.

I know there's only one white rhino left on the planet.. At this point, banning hunting them is futile.

I don't like the idea of that.

Nature runs just fine without us. By shooting them, you are creating a different selection pressure than letting nature take it's course, esp given most hunters are going for large size and prominence (the healthiest) vs mercy killing the mangy, starving ones.

I'm ok with controlling against nuisance animals. They probably are the weaker ones, plus we should selecting against animals that are not afraid of us. Push evolution so that they are naturally terrified of us and stay the F away.

You're celebrating this guy's possible death, probably someone's son, a brother, maybe a father, sibling... because he's a hunter. Says a lot about you.

Do you weep for the bank robber that gets shot dead after blowing away three cops?

The guy was trying to kill the bear! The bear's last gasp was to roll over on his ass.

Cry me a river.

Hunting a bear is hardly akin to a murder of three cops getting shot. You're in lala-land.

MMmmm... going to be unpopular here.. These animals are no different than us designing the flora of a habitat and putting animals in said flora is just another element of the ecosystem, an ecosystem we control, cause .... we won, top of the food chain, here we are. That doesnt mean we shouldnt treat these animals with respect, still this is our dominion.
I mean if we didnt control invasive species (plant AND animal) the whole thing would soon be hitting the shitter... for humans that is, is that what we want? To destroy humans?
