Drilling blocked in Senate.
Sweet!
It can be filibustered.
This is a good thing on so many levels. Obviously it's fantastic for America and Americans but it's also a good thing for Alaska. What's more, it keeps all the oil underground.
Hopefully "you wont see a drop of that oil forever..."
*happy dance*
Please explain to me how this is good for Alaska? This is like telling Michigan they can't let GM or Ford open a new plant. (Except slope jobs pay more)
I guess we'll see if Stevens will really execute plan "B". That would be for him to filibuster the ANWRless version of the bill and keep everyone there over Christmas.
What pisses me off the most is that this in just another thing that would pass easily in a straight up or down vote. Democracy "inaction" I suppose.
Are you honestly comparing Michigan manufacturing jobs to this? This a drop in the bucket compared to the importance of manufacturing jobs in Michigan.
Absolutely I am. The automotive industry employs about 70,000 people in Michigan. Link There are approx 10 million people in Michigan. So about .7% of the population is directly employed by the automotive industry.
ANWR is expected to create 50,000 - 65,000 jobs nation-wide. LinkOf those jobs, ~7,500 would be in Alaska. That would be a little better than 1% of Alaska's population. And those jobs, based on current slope worker pay, would be higher paying jobs than automotive jobs. And what's more, this is not a "here today/gone tomorrow" job creation. Most of these jobs will be in play for over a decade. (Think there are people at Chevy who still think they will have jobs in 10 years?)
And this is just one field! I'm not even counting the entire population that is in one way or another employed by the oil industry up here.
Oil is to Alaska what cars are to Michigan. Only much more so...
