Swiftech 462

I recently purchased a Swiftech 462 heatsink/fan combo. After installing it, I turned my computer on and the fan runs for maybe 5 seconds, then shuts off. The PC still runs but the fan completely stops. Then, If I completely turn off the computer and turn it back on, it runs again for a few seconds but then turns off again. If I just reset the machine, it just stays off. Any thoughts on why this is happening???

what motherboard is it? and are you running it off the mobo (3pin fan header) or power supply (4pin connector)?

Check and make sure you plugged it into the correct CPU fan header. It is also possible the fan speed sensor on the fan is dead and is sending back info to the mobo. You could always try plugging a case fan into the cpu fan header, if you know for sure that you have the right fan header.

You might also check and make sure your heatsink is seating correctly, in case you have some kind of thermal protect that is actually shutting down your system before frying your processor. (Assuming the heatsink isn't properly seated.

What thermal compound are you using? Anyway if it seated correctly there should be a clear imprint in the thermal compound where the core squished the thermal compound.

<< 80MM fans should be run off four pin molex power supply headers ONLY.

Cheers!

i run my sunon 39cfm 80mm for my alpha pal8045 off the motherboard and works alright.. on a 300watt antec p/s.

if gr8hoa's mobo is like my dragon+ that has FOC (fan off control or is it fan on control) that shuts the system down to protect the cpu when it detects that the fan stopped (requires a rpm sensing fan), it could be either the fan isnt rpm sensing, it wasnt connected to the correct cpu fan header, or maybe the fan header on the mobo is faulty so that it's not detecting the rpm sensing of the fan. you can disable this safety feature in the bios.. there is a way to disable this feature on bootup to disable in the bios.. im in a hurry, but just do a search, it has been mentioned before.. either in here or in the motherboard forum..

I've got a ECS K7S5A mobo and the fan is running off the power supply.

the fan might simply be bad. i would try that molex connector out with another fan. also, as was suggested, i would try the fan on a different connector.

Most motherboard headers have a very limited amount of current output. Exceed it even briefly and your header (and possibly your mainboard) could be fried. If you can hear your fan at ten feet, it's probably best to skip plugging it into the motherboard header. Your power supply doesn't matter in this case.

As for the original post, your fan is probably defective. The only way to tell is feed it power from a known good source.

Cheers!
