So i have a Packet Engines 1000 switch.... It a layer 3 switch so i want to play around with stuff. I'm trying to configure it via a serial cable via hyper terminal. I don't know what Hyper terminal setting need to be. I am studying for my Cisco CCNA right now and have configured a few 2500 routers so i have the basic concepts down. Any one know the commands for a Packet engines switch? i also under stand you can config it via telnet or snmp.... i have no idea how to do this as the switch itself doesn't have an ip address... any one know how...???

thanks in advance

I assume you don't have the manual, and for some reason can't call the manufacturer to get a copy? I've never heard of the brand, but that's not surprising. Couldn't find much detail through Google, but that's not surprising either; stuff like this doesn't often come up in searches.

For telnet access, I couldn't tell you whether it has a default IP address or not, but you may want to try setting up a single workstation in the 192.168.1.0/24 network with a direct connection to the switch, and try connecting to 192.168.1.1 (or also try 192.168.0.0/24). Those are the usual IP's used for a default, however the switch doesn't necessarily use a default.

The standard console configuration uses 9600bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit. If this was a used switch, it may or may not still be set to the default for this. This is something a CCNA should know, it is a basic thing.

After you manage to either telnet or console into it, you can set the IP address to something that is within the network you're already using rather than the default, so you can telnet again later once it's on your network. That will also open up the SNMP configuration options.

You'll have to figure out the way to configure the switch on your own.

I think Alcatel bought Packet Engine a few years ago. You may be able to find some documentation on the Alcatel web site.

Packet Engine was a pretty hot switch.

Good Luck

right alcatel bought Packet engines and they say they support them but they have no documentaion online (except for the ad pdf)

i have been trying the standard console setting and they never works so i asumed it was a non standard set up. maybe my cable is bad or it doesn't like the fact that its a female to male cable with an adapter on it.

ive run some network discovery/ topolgy programs and it doesn't look like the switch has an IP by default so im going to get a female to female serial cable and try again.... thanks for your help

anyother ideas??

Don't forget it also might use a null modem serial cable rather than a normal serial cable (or worse, a proprietary pinout). There also might be a way to reset the switch to all of its default settings, in case that's why it's not working with anything standard. With some equipment it's done with a pinhole button, or shorting jumpers with a paperclip, or opening the case to short jumpers. You'd have to ask Alcatel about that.
