Switch from Cable to DSL

I've looked at Verizon, which is provided in my area, and that many people have in my area, but they only provide a 640/90 connection. That is not acceptable for me. Hell, my cable is capped at 128 upstream, and that is faster than Verizon. Verizon charges 39.95. Verizon also does not say anywhere on their webpage if they will be giving me an Ethernet modem, or PCI, or USB. And i NEED an external Ethernet modem, or else my home network turns into scrap, and none of the other 4 computers in my house will be able to connect.

Anybody know about Telocity DSL? How reliable is this company? How well does their service perform? They say that they provide 784/392kbps for 49.95 a month, and i want to get rid of crappy@home. They also specify that i can get an external Ethernet modem, so my network can work. How good will Telocity compare to crappy@home?

I know that Verizon is a POS, have heard better things of Telocity. DSL overall is a pain in the ass. I suggest you get the DSL up and running before you even think about disconnecting your cable modem.

I orderd 1.5Mbps / 512Kbps ADSL for $50 that goes through Covad (one of the best Tier 1 DSL providers out there). I'm supposed to have it in about 2 weeks now. Counting down

FWIW, I have been using Verizon DSL (formerly GTE) for over 2 years. The performance has been very good. I am in the Los Angeles area and for $39.95 they offer 768Kbps DL/128Kbps upload and a free DSL box. This requires a 1 year contract. Apparently they are offering a different deal in your neck of the woods. Cable seems to have better specs but, at least in my area, it is much more erratic.

What ever you do, try to get a 30 day money back guarantee offer and keep your cable connection to compare the two.

768K/768K for $49.99! Thats a sweet deal!

If you are considering DSL go with the SDSL flavor. ADSL, has a lot of latency issues and of course sucks on the upload. If you're into online gaming, SDSL is the way to go. I pay $109 for 768K SDSL in my area. I've played with all the different broadband offerings. ADSL, SDSL, cable modem, and DirecPC. I've stuck with SDSL for the past 4 months. Anyone want to buy a DirecPC duo dish?

I guess I'm just lucky. After a year with DSL at about $50 a month I switched to cable. Last night I downloaded a 30meg file at about 312 kbp/s...the fastest I could get with my Qwest DSL was 80 and I lived less than a block from the CO! Switch? Not likely.

DSL service here in davis, CA is really bad getting like 20kbytes/sec max during the day and around 40kbytes/sec max at night. it is supposed to be rated at 1.5 mb DSL too... go figure. don't get DSL if you live in a University town.

OMFG that's terrible for what you must pay.
Do they give you a price break for that?

You people speak highly about Telocity here, but at dslreports.com, there are many people filing class action lawsuits against Telocity. Apparently they are billing customers who don't even have the service up yet.

Any service with a minimum of three large corporations involved in providing it to you, is bound to suck!

Man, unless you're hosting a website/FTP I ponder your reasoning as to why you'd choose DSL over Cable?

- ZERO headache with Cable installation
- If you already got CableTV service, they usually give you a 'combo' deal to get Cable Internet as well
- I'm paying $39.95 (that's WITH the $10 per month to rent the modem) for 1.5mb/300kb

BTW, I was SUPPOSED to have gotten DSL. But after 2 1/2 months of CONTSTANT calling and waiting and scheduling problems and this person not knowing what that person was doing...I told them to go SCREW. I had Cable up and operational in less than a week, it's TWICE the speed of what the DSL would've been, $10 cheaper per month AND my Cable TV & Internet bill is in 1 bill.

The ONLY thing I wish I had that DSL would've given me is a Static IP. My Cable Modem ISP is DHCP, so the only way I could register my Domain Name was to have the ISP set me up with a VHN (Vanity Host Name) that resolved to whatever IP I'm on and use URL Forwarding.

I wish you luck with the DSL though.

hmm.... i don't have either but this is how i see it... DSL slow(if you can call 50k slow) all the time, but definetly consistant. cable fast sometimes, slow sometimes... but whens it's fast.... ain't nothing gonna come close(assuming it's not DL's not capped, UL isn't an issue since DSL is almost always capped at 128k)

DSL is real problematic. My futurenet connection is real unstable and slow. Took 3 months to set up. Sprint have this wireless thing in limited markets. Have you looked into that? Heard its superfast and is only around $40.

I was a Bellsouth customer and I can say that I was pleased with the service.I got 1100/215 consistantly. I am in the process of switching to Telocity(even though DSL Reports list numerous complaints) because Telocity offers a static IP address. I would assume that the speed difference would be minimal. Also, be sure to apply the registry hack before you panic. At first, I was getting about 700/200 until I applied the hack.(information on changing the registry settings can be found at DSL Reports) Anything is better than 56k!
