I recently bought an ASUS EEPC 1005HAB that came with windows 7 starter and 160GB 5400RPM HDD. I am about to add 2 GB RAM to it and already upgraded to WIN7 Ultimate, but Im wondering if I should put in another HDD. I have a 120GB 7200RPM that needs a home, and I dont want to pay the nasty price for a big SSD drive. My question is there a noticeable performance boost going from the 160GB 5400 to the 120 GB 7200? This is just used for some web surfing and remote machine access from work . Will the 7200 cause a larger eating up of battery?

Yeah, the other drive wont give you a real noticable increase in performance. It SHOULD give you an increase, but it wont be anything noticeable. So unless youre an uber geek and just want the performance boost you know is there but cant actually tell the difference in just using it, dont bother.

there should be an increase in performance... not sure how much considering it's a slow atom to begin with, but the drive is definitely going to be faster... whether or not you notice it, I'm not sure... As for the battery, it shouldn't noticeably effect it.

sounds like i just need to add the extra RAM and leave the drive alone. For what im doing with it it is certainly useable but I suspect Id see more bump from RAM than anything...

What about readyboost? I have an SD card reader and a 4GB card itching to do something if it's worth it.

nope was on battery drain and if you were doing multitasking(which isn't surfing internet and playing mp3s and such) the speedier spindle speed is noticed. But more ram(a 2GB is nice) is a better buy/hardware improvement... goodluck

If you have the time you could just clone your current HD to the 7200rpm one and see if there is a difference

Yeah I know I could clone it, it's just that switching the HDD is fairly involved on this machine so Ive read, so I was only going to do it if it really made sense. I did find an eepc forum last night that suggested getting an SDHC for readyboost and I just happened to have an 8GB needing a home. Set it up last night and it does seem to make things a bit snappier ( especially some installs i was running ) Im thinking between the readyboost and RAM I wont bother switching out the hard drive.

Thanks for everyone's input!
