I put a new hard drive in, did a full copy from my old one, now my music and videos skip and everything is sluggish, anyone have any idea why that would happen.

More details would be nice...

What drive?
What mobo and SATA controller?
How did you do the data move?
Are you booting off the SATA drive now?
Which OS are you running (be specific)?

Additional information would be helpful, but that should be enough to get us started.

If you still have the old PATA drive intact, I suggest putting your critical files on that for the short term. That is, while you wipe and reinstall onto the SATA drive. I suspect the maxtor crapware buggered your system. The easiest way to see if that's the case is to just wipe and reinstall the OS and the rest of your software onto the SATA drive. You'll need the floppy that came with your mobo that has the SATA drivers on it (hit F6 when prompted during the initial install). Wipe the drive, format NTFS (either regular or the quick method) and proceed with the install.

I have a system running off of SATA RAID (two arrays only because the drives are different sizes) on my MSI mobo and it's not sluggish in the least bit. Then again, I'm also using RAID 0 on each array (for performance)...

norton (yes, I know don't shoot me, running off of cd) Says there's a problem with the Indexes, but it can't fix it without a reboot but it won't launch of the cd from a reboot, can the built in Windows one fix it?

As I said, it sounds like the maxtor crapware has buggered your OS/system... You can try a checkdisk on your drive (will launch on reboot) to see if that fixes it. Chances are, though, you'll really need to wipe and reinstall everything in order to fix it properly. I ALWAYS junk the software that either comes with a drive, or don't bother downloading anything that is offered (unless it's to check a drive before it goes for RMA replacement).

Here's the thing, I'm running Windowx XP 64bit, and there's no software to do a full hd to hd copy that's free, other than that available to me, as norton ghost doesn't work. I ran a chkdsk on boot and it doesn't seem to have fixed it...

Have any suggestions for a bootable HD-to-HD coppier that supports SATA? (for free)

I have a second set of serial ata ports on the board, but windows refuses to boot from them.

(btw, thanks for the help akira)

I think another issue (you didn't post it earlier) is that you're running a Beta OS... Running the regular Windows XP Pro will probably get rid of all your issues concerning the drive being 'sluggish'... Especially since you're using beta drivers and OS...

Actually, I've used this beta OS only since the original releases, and haven't had a single issue. I erased my original win32 install because this one works as well or better in 99% of cases. Only problem I've had is no HD-to-HD copying software. I kinda figured that would be one of the responses, but I know that's not the problem having run it for ~6-7 months just fine.

I attempted the 64 bit version but when it couldn't locate my SATA controller I ditched it... Chances are, THAT is the issue with you. You managed to 'clone' your install over but the drivers are just not ready for real use and SATA drives/controllers.

I'm running an Athlon64 3400+ on the MSI K8N Neo Platinum mobo with no speed issues (at all) with the non-beta version of XP (SP2)... If you're going to continue to use beta software, you'll have to expect this kind of thing to happen... Especially from microsoft.

If you're going to maintain that it's not the BETA OS, then it's the maxtor hard drive OR the crapware that you used to move your data over. The ONLY way to eliminate that, or anything else, as being the source of the issue is to do a CLEAN install onto the SATA drive and see if the sluggish performance continues. IF it does, then you know it's either the OS, the hard drive, or the BETA OS and how it deals with SATA at this time.

Alright, got lucky, installed the VIA raid drivers I found lurking around the net, replaced the microsoft ones that it was using for the SATA controller, works great now. Apparently the Microsoft stock drivers suck.

Thanks for all the help Akira

There you go... m$ drivers were the issue... I guess I had assumed that you had already checked for SATA drivers before posting...

I won't be looking to install the 64 bit version onto my own system until it's an official release. That way, I'll get it in my quarterly update package... I'll probably also need to wait for the update for WMCE before I do the update...
