switched laptop HDDs and "no fixed disks are present"

I have a Toshiba Sat. 2210XCDS and some pretty new Compaq (ya, i know they suck too) P3-700. The Toshiba came with an IBM 6 gig HDD. The Compaq came with a Toshiba 15.5 GB HDD. I popped both boxes open and switched the two. Now, the Compaq detects and uses the IBM drive fine, but the Toshiba won't detect the Toshiba HDD and use it! I'm wondering if they are different and non-compatible types, or if i just have to change a jumper or something. After i switched the HDD harnesses, the HDDs each fit fine in each computer, and on each there is 4 extra pins (2x2) off to the side.

If anyone can help me out, I would really really appreciate it!
I kinda need to get these both up and going soon, so hopefully it can be done . If there is no possible way to get it working, I will be forced to open both systems up and switch HDDs and harnesses .

Do you need a jumper for the HDD in the Toshiba as not all laptops cover all the HDD pins, check to see if you have any spare and stick a jumper on.

Check the toshiba bios to see that the hard disk detection is set to AUTO and not for a fixed disk size.

Finally check for a toshiba bios update.

I flashed the BIOS but it still doesn't detect the new HDD. There is no place to set it to auto-detect or manually enter the settings either.

Thanks a lot for the reply! hehe, I do intend to whipe the thing clean. After I installed the HDD, the first thing i did was use a boot disk and try to open FDISK. I can't remember any times in which FDISK gave me the "no fixed disks present" error . I was planning on going in and deleting the partion. From there I was going to reinstall win2k pro, which I installed on the 6 gig that came with the machine. Hehe, no way I would use 9x or ME anymore . The win2k setup told me the same thing as FDISK, it couldn't find any HDDs.
I think il pop open the Compaq, and without messing with all the HDD harnesses, il just plug the thing in and boot. I'l remove ALL partions, and maybe, hopefully it will help. The only other thing I can think of is it may have something to do with the HDD signature that was written to it?

Ive tried both win2k setup and FDISK, neither detect the HDD at all. I'm still thinking that the computer isn't even detecting and using the HDD. I'm at a loss here . I will be calling toshiba and "premier" tech support tomorrow. Hopefully there is something that I can do. If not, il just be stuck with fricken 5.5 GB of usable space in my laptop . Minus the 700-800 for win2k.

/me is pissed! Ive worked with computers for a long time and expected this to work NP. heh, and ive installed enough HDDs to make a person sick . I need to get a new laptop and dump this piece of crap that i couldn't even pick out! Someone send me money now
