That's the saddest part about expensive upgrades, they never last long enough...I don't know if it's a hobby or an addiction, but being a PC enthusiast we get to do these crazy things every once a while

Depends on what you buy. But yea thats what i hate about computers.. Thats why you have to do alot of research ask alot of questions, and keep your current computer until it truely does get to the point of needing a upgrade..

You cant really call a E8400 in need of upgrading yet.. It not nearly done. So the problem about saying PC parts dont last long enough can be interprited differantly by people. One person might think his E8400 is a peice of trash because he doesnt get 60 fps anymore and only gets 45. Others think thats fine.. So while you are spending houndreds on a upgrade they keep the E8400 for another 6 months or year. Then upgrade there PC while you are stuck with your other computer that you ddnt really need to upgrade to in the first place.

The 4850 someone mentioned wasnt really top of the line to begin with anyway.. It wasnt much faster then a 8800GT, and i relised that like 2 months after i bought one.. Thats why i upgraded to the 4890 shortly after. The 4850 was a bad decision.

So the way i see is this.. I spent like $850 on my PC when i got it over a year ago not counting the 4890 cause i had a 4850. Iv had it for like 1-2 years now. The E8400 as i mentioned plays Bad company 2 just fine i get 45-60fps depending on where i am in the game or what happens.. I played crysis and its expansion just fine getting average 45 fps or so. I play fallout 3 60fps constant, while someone like you would upgrade again and spend another $800 ill keep my pc until my fps drop below 40. One thats happens I'll upgrade for another $800.

So Lets say after 4 years, I upgrade twice. I spend $1600, the way some people are needing the best and constant 60 frames in 4 years for them they will spend like $3200, simply because 45fps at the highest details isnt good enough for them those are the people who say computers dont last long enough lol.. They just cant stretch what they got.. They always have to have the best.

If you think PC's are an expensive hobby, try astronomy. Im into astronomy and telescope's and binoculars, eyepeices, stuff like that cost way more then computers lol.. I bought a 10 inch telescope " thats a 10 inch wide mirror draw a line on a peice of paper thats 10 inchs" and it was $600. Then my 10x50 binoc's were $90, then each eyepeice is around $50 for cheap ones and $150+ for the good ones. You need at least 4-5 diff eyepeices too.. 10 inch telescope's can only see so much.. So after awhile you want to see more. So you buy a 16 inch then a 21 inch and 16 inch scopes are over $1200, and 21 inchs are just nuts.

For those of you who are interested, here's an update on my project:

I purchased an Asus 5970 last week and it arrived yesterday. I've linked some images of the upcoming setup as well. I'm expecting for my i7 920 parts to arrive next week so I decided to run some initial benchmarks on my current E8400 system.

Enjoy the pics and benches..more to come:

Okay folks, I ran the initial benchmarks on my current system:

E8400@3.9Ghz
Asus P5KE-Wifi AP mobo PCI-E 1.0 16x
8gb DDR2 PC2 6400
Windows 7 Pro 64
CCC driver 10.3a
CCC settings at default and AA/AF on application control

The results indicate a clear CPU and PCI-E 1.0 bottleneck, I'll be testing this on my new i7 setup next week hopefully to compare.
My Benchmarks:

Cool interested in seeing the results from what you posted so far its is being held back.
I also currently just picked up his game and I have an i7 + 4890 so I would like to see how the numbers compare.

Well said. There are so many more expensive hobbies out there. Computers thankfully are mainstream and even the more exotic parts (watercooling even) are still inexpensive relatively speaking. An MB swap and new CPU is maybe $500 at most. The old parts can be sold or used in another machine. But computers in general are much more high maintenance in terms of the amount of time you need to put into them software-wise. I frankly do not think Windows is that consumer friendly. I am beginning to see 100% why Anand has warmed up to Mac. Very limited and hence not for me, but man I have to say it is better for 95% of regular web browsing, photo viewing, e-mail checking people out there.

Thanks, my i7 shipment was delayed, but I will be getting it next week hopefully, then I'll post some new benchmarks, including hybrid CF scaling. Stay tuned.

I have not read all the posts and comments here but I would like to post what my experience is. I have been aching to upgrade my E8400 OC to 4.2 since the I7's came out. I have waited and finally did it because I thought I would see some difference even if it was slight. I have my I7 920 OC and running at 4.0 and it is no I repeat NO better than my E8400 in the games I play (CODWAW,BC2,Battlerfield,crysis) and loading programs are not any better if not worse in some cases. For me at least it has been a total waste of money and time. I do understand not all software used the quads power and it may be better in future stuff but for now if you have a good OC socket 775 you may just want to keep it for a while. I am runnig 2 crossfired 4890's. I do admit on some things the 920 multiplier stays at 12 its not even enough demand on the processor. I will continue to play around with it but for now at least it was not worth the time and money.
Long live the E8400's and that series they do kick butt. Wish now I would have picked up a E8700..........
Just my 2 cents

i'm so glad i didn't upgrade to the i7 and im trying very hard to hold out. I love my e8400/ip35-pro and to be honest i woulda still have been happy with my E6600 conroe and 975X chipset. now THAT was a pointless upgrade!

I will tell you do not upgrade with I7,or I5 out now unless you spend BIG Bucks for extreme edition or something. I wish I didn't, I am very unhappy. Those that tell you its a big improvement were not running a overclocked dual over 4ghz or thay have a real need with software that is built around the quads. I waited and fell into the BS.......
Oh I also had a IP35 Pro before the p45 MSI board and liked both. Both OC'ed about the same I just wanted x-fire.

Hang tite fellas, some more detailed benches coming shortly, one thing I can say for sure is that there is a significant improvement in the smoothness of games, going from a dual core to a quad core. The minimum frames and averages jump up and it really contributes overall. I'd say definitely to switch to a quad core, it doesn't have to be an i7 in particular however.

Wow, that's a surprisingly sizeable difference for most games.
Interesting. Are CPU's becoming important again?
