right i have decided to go to linux tonight, i have had just about enough of this thing being guay.

i have decided to try ubuntu first and see how it goes

i have discovered ATi drivers from Ati so im fine there, and i think i have spotted places to get drivers for my Microsoft web cam, and a means to sync my Dell Axim x51v.

just gonna download the latest ubuntu, ati drivers n such and put them in a folder. then hopefully get started

i trust i can ask you guys when it goes tits up?

well, what i did when i switched to linux, i s make a list of all the things i need to do with the machine.

check email
surf web
print pictures, documents, etc
load pictures from my digicam
edit video from my video cam
play games (list them all)
listen to music
etc

once you have your list, make sure to note what you will use and where you will get it to make the functionality that you get in windows, work for you in linux. there may be something you've overlooked that you really need.

i'm sure people will answer your questions if you ask nice.

well one thing that would be nice is beign able to use my freecom NDAS 400gig external drive in its NAS configuration. but due to it being a DAS drive as well, freecom supply some software that detects the drive on the net work and then presents the drive to the computer like its mounted via USB.

infact you mount the drive much like you would using deamon tools to mount a virtual disk drive.

but yeah, i need to save all my email settings, FF favourites

i do have a second computer here at home, that is on XP, so if i cant get some of the functions i would like ,(such as canon digi cam, Dell Axim Active Sync) then i suppose i can just as easy do it on there and transfer the files

ill have a look to see if my freecom drive will work, that would be nice

Ubuntu 6.10 would be your best bet, it's friendly to non-Linux users.

Just remember to read up on the Ubuntu forums for installing 3d acceleration/drivers/etc. It'll save you a headache or two

Exactly....make sure that everything you want to do can be done. Btw- since you have ATI drivers get ready for lackluster performance in gaming. Its not Linux's fault, its ATI's fault.
