Switching to W7 - should go 64bit or not ?

I tend to be an early adopter, and I made the mistake to go Vista 64bit, thinking 64 would open up the future (and more RAM as we all know) After changing countless drivers I've got a good top end system now, that really delivers FPS on all the later games tested in AnandTech... except Oblivion! Bad luck, it is my favorite game - after Morrowind. Bethesda says Oblivion won't run in Vista 64, so we had been warned... The frustration comes with the fact that problems only appear by the time you are level 10.

So now as I contemplate W7, I am really in a quandary : should I go back to 32 bits... Seems a bit retro. Is there a way to get Oblivion to really work in 64? (I mean Oblivion with the works, OBSE, OOO, 20 mods, etc..)

Or can I get W7 64 and organise a double-boot with an older Vista or XP 32? How could that be done?

By the way, older Morrowind has no problem with 64bits (or more precisely the 32 emulation provided).

Thanks for ideas.

Not sure where you heard this but Oblivion has always worked fine on my 64-bit machine (Windows 7) and my brother's 64-bit machine (Vista).

And yes, just install W7 x64 right on top of Vista x32 and you'll get a boot menu at start up that will let you choose which OS you want to run.

Dual booting has been built into Windows since Win98.

Is this a joke?.....I have played Oblivion from start to finish with all expansion packs and some Mods and it works great in Vista x64,same goes for Win7 too, with all due respect I like to know where you get this FUD from since I find it hard to believe it came from Bethesda?

As a gamer myself, both beta games tester and general gamer I can tell you I have no issues with Vista x64 /Win7 x64 for 32/64 bit gaming, just make sure you got 64 bit drivers for your hardware and keep your DX9.0c updated for older DX9 games and 99.9% of the time you are good to go.
Right I'm off to play Oblivion again on Win7 x64.

Btw Morrowind works fine too in Vista/Win7.

Heck I've only played it on x64 systems: AMD/Intel Windows Xp x64/Vista x64/Win7 x64 it hasn't mattered really.

I think it might have more to do with the fact that they may not TEST it on those platforms. Or that it isn't compiled to be 64bit.

In my experience there are more mod combinations that will cause crashes or framerate issues than there are stable combos. You really need to be very careful with mods in Oblivion, they can improve the game a great deal but also can lead to many hours of hair-pulling frustration. So yeah, my money is on mod conflicts.

Go to :

And click the 64 bits tab.

However, I may be wrong and my crashes may come from conflicting mods. They tend to happen when exiting towns, in particular Bravil. I'll do more testing.

I had a quick look at Oblivion forums,

Vista:

We do not formally support Vista as Oblivion is not a Games for Windows title. Our internal tests -- and external tests done by outside parties -- have not found any issues with Oblivion on Vista. Should you have problems, it's not something we support or can help you with. The secured installers for downloadable Oblivion content are not compatible with 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows and therefore downloadable content will not work with Oblivion.

So it would seem to do with the installer with downloadable content version.

As to your crashing they had this section on it.

Frequent Crashing possibly due to old system file

Some users may experience frequent crashing due to an older system file. These crashes may be attributed to the 'mpeg2dmx.ax' file. Simply renaming the file to "mpeg2dmx.ax.old" may correct this issue.

Frequent Crashing possibly due to connected HP printer

A program related to HP printers may cause Oblivion to crash.
Before running Oblivion: Press Ctr-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager. Go to the Processes Tab. Right click on any process starting with the letters HP and select End.
Running Oblivion at this point may have this issue corrected.
Note: The PC will need to be restarted to reinitialize printing or imaging.

You are very kind to post all this which may be useful to many. In my case as I am a retired scientist with a grounding in IT you can bet I knew it, and have gone much further in my testing, using two identical rigs one with V64 and the other V32. When using very high end settings and certain combinations of mods, some issues appear in V x64 that do not appear in x86. I'd rather have Bethesda do the work...

Unfortunately Bethesda are not supporting Oblivion on Vista or Windows 7 May I direct your attention to The Witcher, a far superior title that works wonderfully on 64-bit versions of windows j/k, best of luck resolving your issues, but I would strongly advise against installing a 32 bit version of Windows 7 just to support a single older game.

More info below.

Secure Loader or Aladdin HASP error

(Note: This primarily affects 64-Bit Windows XP and Windows Vista, but has also been seen on 32-bit editions of Windows XP.)

* Problem: You receive one of the following two error messages with error code 0x80040702:
o The Aladdin HASP SL Runtime protecting module "<folder name>\bethsec.dll" could not initialize properly because it is incompatible with the current platform version. Please contact your product vendor.
o The Secure Loader used to protect this software has encountered a fatal error. Please contact your software vendor.
* Cause: The Secure Loader is incompatible with 64-bit Windows XP and Windows Vista; this seems to relate to a known problem with the InstallShield software and msvcrt.dll.
* Solution 1: Install them on another machine or partition with an earlier operating system and manually copy the files in the data directory to your main machine. (Virtual Machines are also a good choice here, since you don't actually need to play the game, just install the files.)
* Solution 2: Buy the box set for Knights of the Nine. The installers in that boxed set are compatible with Windows Vista. According to Bethesda support, there is no other work-around (see talk page for details), however the solutions below may work. Important: If you cannot get any of these solutions to work, and you've already downloaded the files, don't delete your downloads. A future patch may allow their installation on Windows Vista.
* Solution 3: (Tested only on Windows Vista 64-bit.)

Buy and download the "Knights of the Nine Downloadable Content Collection" package from http://direct2drive.com/. This package works with both the retail and Direct2Drive versions of Oblivion. It contains all of the official plug-ins except for Fighter's Stronghold. The Shivering Isles expansion sold by Direct2Drive is also confirmed to work on Vista 64-bit.

* Solution 4: (Tested only on Windows XP 32-bit.)

Reboot and hit F8 immediately as Windows boots up. When prompted with a menu, select "Safe Mode with Networking" (required for Internet activation; for phone activation, regular "Safe Mode" will do). Re-try your install. (Note: this may be a bit challenging, as there is limited screen real-estate in Safe Mode.)

* Solution 5: (Works in all configurations.)

(Note: With this method, you do not need to actually run the installation program. Doing so will only cause the same error messages as mentioned above.)

1. Download and install Universal Extractor 1.5 or later.
2. Open each plug-in's executable file with Universal Extractor and extract the files using the "isxunpack method". This will place several files in a Disk1 folder under whatever folder you specify (the same folder as the executable, by default, so Oblivion_Horse_Armor_Pack.exe would create an Oblivion_Horse_Armor_Pack\Disk1 folder structure).
3. Use Universal Extractor again, and in each of the previous Disk1 folders, open data1.cab. (Do not open data1.hdr.) This will create a Data1 folder in the specified folder.
4. Copy the Data folder in each of the above Data1 folders to your Oblivion folder. When asked if you want to merge the two Data folders, say "Yes". (Alternatively, you can copy all the files in each Data folder to the Oblivion\Data folder, which will avoid the merge questions each time.)
* Should you wish to avoid this entire process in the future, you can use either OBMM or Wrye Bash's mod manager at this point to create mod files simply by including the entire contents of each Data folder.
5. Delete all the interim files you created in the above steps.
6. Launch the game, go into the Data Files section, and select the appropriate checkboxes.

Getting to level 10 in Oblivion magically causes an issue in Vista x64? That's hilarious! Someone is pulling your chain. There's one epic nerd on this forum with 568 games installed in Vista x64 without an issue.
