sx38p2 pro 4850 crossfire?

hi everyone! i just wanna know if my stock psu (450w) can handle all of this:
sx38p2 pro
INTEL Q6600 2.40ghz G0 (stock)
SAPPHIRE 100242-1GL Radeon HD 4850 1GB crossfire
2 x CORSAIR DOMINATOR 4GB 1066 (8gb)
1000 gb seagate sata II hard drive
400 gb western digital sata II hard drive
500 gb seagate sata II hard drive
logitech G9
G15 gaming keyboard
logitech z680 5.1 surround system
dlink dwa-130 wireless N usb adapter
microsoft lifecam

i ordered a pair of 4850 from newegg but they sent me an older version(red card) and a newer version(blue card) of 4850. installed it and tested, wouldnt pass vantage. my monitor just went black and it says out of range for several times. figured that its just the drivers, reinstalled vista x64 and installed ATI drivers and i did vantage a couple of times without problems. run memtest for the night and it was good. tried vantage before going to work, and i got bsod. i tried one the card(the blue one) and it wouldnt pass vantage. tried the other one, no problems. tried both of them again and i played crysis for 4 hours without problems. also set 70% fan speed on both 4850 and temps are good. 44 at idle and 65 at load. its loud though. is my psu in the brink of being overmatched or is it just the drivers? and btw i used 3870 for crossfire without any problems? if it is, what are my options? underclock the cards? i love these 4850s and i wanna keep them . thanks

If its a newer model PSU then it can handle the syste with a single 4850 but its gotta offer about 28A or more on the 12V rails. But you'll need a good quality 600W or better PSU if you want a pair of 4850s on your system.

BTW this has nothing to do with notebooks. This should have been posted in either the video card section or PSU section. I'm sure a mod will come along and move it sooner or latter.

I am running the same shuttle and i ran 2 3850's till i upgraded to a 3870x2(which i unfortunately just had to sell due to money being tight) and it handled it fine

First off mpilchfamily, this forum is also for Small Form Factor Systems. It may primarily be notebook discussions, but the shuttle SFF items fit well here, too. Standard hardware discussion forums were hostile to those of us doing mATX setups (they were viewed as sub-standard).



Onto the topics at hand. I've got first hand experience with this.


Unfortunetly no ... I was running a simillar setup and have scalled back to a single 4870.

4x 1GB Corsair 667 (yeah ... slow i know)
2x VisionTek 4850 HD Crossfire
2x Samsung 1TB
1x WD 750GB
1x Samsung DVD Burner (SATA)
Powered USB Hub (my USB devices aren't pulling power from the system)
Vista Ultimate x64


Not always, but often enough, the system would just shut down in heavy gaming. I picked up a suplimental powersupply to try it out ... but I never tried it as an opertunity came along for me to sell the 4850's and grab a single 4870 without loosing any $$.

I miss the crossfire though. I loved maxing AA @ 1920x1200. I still happily run 2x or 4x AA but I really miss the 12x and 24x shader enhanced AA offered with crossfire.

When I find a good deal I'm going to try squeezing in one of the dual GPU 4800 cards along with the suplimental powersupply.



The powersupplies I'm talking about fit into the 5-1/2 bay. Newegg has a few to choose from.
