Yes, it's an official policy but the transit workers had no idea what i was talking about when they rerouted the L and made me 30 min late to work.. No one asks for proof, they just grumble and go to work.

I agree, but in this case who among us would have actually jumped onto those tracks and did what he did, not knowing if you would actually clear the train as it passed over?

This was extremely heroic but the man was also with his 2 young kids, what would happen to them if he died? Imagine the trauma they would've went through if he didn't make it out alive. It was a ballsy thing to do, but perhaps too risky considering the chances of the man dying even if you were brave enough to try and save him.

I commend him for his actions, but some rescue attempts are just too risky to take especially if you have a family to take care of. It's one thing if you're a cop and it's your job to take risks because you're trained to handle certain things, but this guy was an innocent construction worker who took a huge chance to save this guy and luckily made it out okay.

It didn't pass. It stopped over them. They had to wait for the transit workers to cut power to the third rail before they crawled out.

If you get a gift of over $11,000 the GIVER has to pay tax on it (and the limit is $11,000 per person per year, and there is a $1 million lifetime threshold that factors in somehow too, I'm not entirely clear on all of it). The recipient doesn't have to pay taxes on a gift.

However you have to pay taxes on prizes regardless of value. I'm not sure how they draw the line between gifts and prizes. For instance, when Oprah gave away all those cars, the people who received them had to pay income taxes on them. That seems like a gift to me. If you got in on the free Vista/Office 2007 Microsoft was giving away (to developers only) for watching webcasts, you have to pay taxes on that even though it seems more like a gift than a prize.

So I'm not really sure how the line is drawn or whether the guy will have to pay taxes, all I know is the $11k threshold for the gift tax has nothing to do with it.
