Yeah, they've crammed a bit too much in most seasons, IMHO. I agree with @GodisanAtheist that Sci-Fi did a better job.Never read the books so I can't comment on the series "vs" but as a stand-alone story I've been enjoying it.... seems like they may be trying to cram too much story into too little show for the last season though.
It feels like they've dumped the political and more thought provoking stuff (mostly with throw away lines) for more generic bad guy vs good guy shoot'em up. All the character development, and I use that very loosely felt more tacked on for runtime than any real development. I do have bigger fears of this turning into a very unsatisfying ending as they cram all the stuff they showed in this episode.
This fairly surprising as the last season, I'm about 40% the way through the last book (9 or 10?) and I guess they are just stopping well before where the series will actually finish. Or just straight up skip several books?
If they can raise the cash for a couple of suitably budgeted movies, I would like that over a miniseries. I'd prefer the full series, but since that isn't happening...- The going theory is that they will go through book 6 with the series, and wrap up the last three books with a miniseries or a couple movies further on in the future.

At least the Witcher dropped all at once (Netflix).
AppleTV, Amazon, HBO - they all do weekly episodes now at least for some of their shows. Hulu did that for Murders in the Building. HBO did that for Hacks. Apple for Foundation. Amazon now with The Expanse.
Netflix is the only major streaming service that drops all their whole seasons at once anymore that I know of.
