Not reading the thread because I only started watching this series a couple of days ago. I am on season 2, and this show is highly addictive. It has been a little predictable as to where things are going so far, but other than that, top notch stuff.
skip the hybrid proto-human season.
it was stupid.

Oh wow, and this is the last season right? It sounds like the show has gotten rave reviews, is there a particular reason they're just deciding to call it quits without wrapping up? Or maybe, as someone above said, the goal is to explore the rest with spin offs?

Seems an odd place to just.. Stop.
According to the couple articles I read the end of book 6 has a kind of natural ending point, as book 7 skips ahead 30 years for it's beginning.

So the main characters now are no longer relevent after this season?

They said they are, but of course they age 30 years, which could make it expensive to age them with CGI, or perhaps use new actors a la the Crown

They are: it's just that, in the books, they live LONGER than the current average lifespan.

For example, Avassarala is @ one point with 123 years old and "on her last liver", and this is NOT "just before she dies", though i don't recall what was her age @ the time of her death (if it was even mentioned).

Sometimes its a smart move to let a show go dormant for a bit, then start canvasing social media and waking up all the sleeper agents after years.

I suspect The Expanse is going to go dormant from a show perspective for a while, but the series will continue to exist in the form of additional books, video games, etc until the time is right for 2-3 movies or a miniseries to wrap up the last trilogy.

If managed intelligently (and honestly it has been fairly well managed so far) I can see The Expanse being a small but rather lucrative franchise to slow burn over years. So long as the Authors ensure there is a sort of "bible" that all media has to refer back to to maintain consistency, we should also avoid the absolute ****show that is r/Witcher right now.

Sorta. I mean it could be an ending point if one never wanted to have any sort of progression or closure to the alien storyline. I suppose if you did end it at that point you could argue that the alien stuff was minor and only a plot device to exposure the other aspects of humanity.. But then the first and second books don't quite fit. So, shrug.

They changed from the books too much IMO. For example, Michio Pa (Sp????) in the show has virtually NOTHING to do with her character from the books.

Agreed. I think they meant just a natural ending point in the sense of there is some sort of resolution point, vs a totally unsatisfying cliffhanger.

I just want it to keep going until it's all told. Now I'll have to read the books though

This is largely why I couldn't watch the show, the characters were so fundamentally different it was jarring.

Would be interested to hear what you think of the books after watching the show.

The show is good IMO, but the books are better ... MUCH better.

Ofc this subjective so, just because I LIKE THEM very much doesn't mean others do as well.

Certainly. I loved the books as well which made tolerating the show essentially impossible. I suspect it may very well be the same the other way around, the only difference is the books offer dramatically more narrative so I wonder if that would tip the scales.

How far did you get in live version? I had a really hard time with season 1 and some of season 5 but really enjoy it otherwise. I did have to spend some time decoupling the book from the show in my brain though

I think the end of s2? Maybe not even that far? I remember being incredibly annoyed about how different Ashford was maybe? I had the same decoupling problem and it was worse because I really wanted to keep things straight until book 9 came out. Now that I've read it and I'm done with the books I'm going to try to go back and give the show a chance again, may be too accustom to the books, but we'll see.

My understanding is that for the sake of screentime and brevity that comes along with adapting a novel to a show, they rolled a couple of different characters into Ashford and Drummer to the point where they are in fact unrecognizable.

While I admit I have not read the books, the characters were so dynamic, rounded, and well acted on the show that I cannot see how they could possibly be more interesting in the books. Ashford and Drummer's relationship and dynamic is another thing spun from whole cloth that is deeply satisfying as a viewer.

So I just finished watching E4 and I'm wondering if James will undo what he did now that some things have changed for the worse.

I'll get back to you in 6 months or so!

(just ordered the first three books)

EDIT: I can say that as of now from my perspective having not read the books, the Amazon series has been pretty damn kick-ass.

s6e4 was meh but probably needed to move the plot along.
and the added mystery of the guards is making me look forward to the answer.

i guess eps 5 is the proto ships kicking ass.
and eps 6 is the trailer for whatever the producers want to have next for the show

2 episodes left. I really wish we had gotten an 8 episode final season. I guess the great ratings only applied to a relatively small audience.

"Never feel bad about not killing people"

God damn, Expanse scratches that Star Trek itch better than most modern Star Trek ever will.

- Looks like MCRN is gonna get plastered by Inaros' ring gate weapons. Rule number 1 of the Expanse: Never second guess Avasarala.

- Yup, dead brother is getting pet cemetaried.

- Ohhh looks like we got a cameo by Duarte and a nice philosophy primer on the value of sacrifice.

- Michio! Just cause she sucks at killing people, doesn't mean she is useless in a crisis! Fuck I love the Expanse!

- Holden being a god damn Paladin again! I feel like we're going to need to pay attention to that Torpedo, its going to be important in the season finale.

- Amos' character growth has been absolutely incredible.

- Love how Inaros' XO is just as power hungry and ruthless as he is, just smarter about it.

- Starting to get Filip's character now. He's basically the personification of the Belt: At war with itself dealing with its hatred of the inners while simultaneously making up excuses for being treated like garbage by Inaros.

Lawd its been a good season and i'm more and more confident it will be a solid send off for the series while the show runners get

Yes. Could be rule #2 as well!

- Yup, dead brother is getting pet cemetaried.

Yeah, this was almost too obvious a setup.

Great minds - thought the same thing about the torpedo, otherwise, all that attention for naught.

letting Inaros live the 1st time caused this major problem.
letting Inaros live this 2nd time and inadvertently giving him a nuke torpedo is going to bite the good guys again.

cant wait to see the irony from the nuke torpedo.

Well, that's not quite the Star Trek philosophy, but I guess for the world of the Expanse, it's a start.

Without being too spoilery, I loved Drummer's speech!

I imagine it's common, throughout history, for a sociopathic despot's supporters to react that way.
