The other seasons are already on Amazon. I'd wager they are a really strong contender to bring it on board.

Amazon has second run rights in the US I believe, while Netflix has, I think, first run rights internationally.

Either player could easily make the jump to having full rights. Netflix doesn't release numbers but I'd love to know if the show is doing well internationally, because that could be a decisive factor for Netflix to pick up the American first run rights. Amazon gets a huge bonus by knowing the numbers for second run in America, which may be the prime regional market. Adding first rights in our region may be simpler while they leave Netflix to continue with first run internationally.

Definitely an interesting situation, and I really hope we hear a solid answer soon.

I would rather Amazon get it after the somewhat lackluster Lost in Space. I think Amazon has more to try for while Netflix is just resting on dozens of new shows.

I didn't think they could top the last episode but they did. It was action from start to finish. Letting this show die would be a tragedy.

Quotes from guys from reddit who read the books:

This is basically the finale of act 1. It will carry over next week and transition into act 2. So yeah, these first 2 1/2 seasons have just been setting the stage for when shit really hits the fan.

Yeah, the stories of books 1 and 2 are the deceiving prelude to the real story. Amazon or someone has to pick this up, I can't go without seeing the rest unfold on the small screen.

It really would be a tragedy if the show never got picked up.

Then again, shows that have been crap since their inception like American Idol continue to pull in viewers while excellently made shows like this remain short lived with far far less viewers. It's an aggravating cycle that never ends.

I have watched the series up to date but I just started listening to the audio book Leviathan Wakes which is what the first season is based on, I think? Anyhow Its really good read and its kind of nice to have faces to put to your characters. So far from what I remember the series and book are spot on. Hopefully we get more seasons.

I still remember when I stumbled across the trailer for the show's premier and I couldn't believe how interesting it was breathing new life into what I call institutionalized scifi shows where its the same cookie cutter pattern over and over again. When I look at Syfy's merch page they don't even have any for the Expanse which kind of tells us how much interest they have in the show.

I've signed the petition on change.org and written Amazon Studios asking them to pick it up but only time will tell if these things were successful. Amos in the airlock with Strickland was superb after shooing Prax out.

The first two seasons went about 1.5 books in. They mess with the chronology a bit. Earth especially is shown way more in the TV show. There have been a number of divergences from the book. None of them especially troubling. Or at least none of the central characters change too much.

Yea I'll have to admit knowing what happens to Miller I've been forwarding past his chapters and just listing to Holden chapters for now, I only have a few days left on the audiobook checkout.

I really love the amount of effort and attention to detail the writers and support staff put into this show. Everybody seems so passionate about getting it all right which I find refreshing.

I may have to give this show another try. I watched the first 2-3 episodes and remember thinking it was boring with characters I cared nothing for.

“The Expanse” could find new life on Amazon.

Variety has confirmed with sources that the streaming giant is in talks to pick up the sci-fi series for what would be its fourth season. The news comes after NBCUniversal-owned cable network Syfy announced they would not be picking up the show again once its third season concludes in June. The series is produced and fully financed by Alcon Television Group.

The story unfolds across a colonized galaxy 200 years in the future, when two strangers become unwittingly swept up in a vast conspiracy. Based on the New York Times bestselling book series collectively known as “The Expanse,” written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey), “The Expanse” stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham and Frankie Adams.

Amazon declined to comment.

“‘The Expanse’ transported us across the solar system for three brilliant seasons of television,” Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks at NBCU Cable Entertainment, said at the time of the Syfy cancellation. “Everyone at Syfy is a massive fan of the series, and this was an incredibly difficult decision. We want to sincerely thank ‘The Expanse’s’ amazing cast, crew and all the dedicated creatives who helped bring James S.A. Corey’s story to life. And to the series’ loyal fans, we thank you most of all.”

Syfy recently ordered a series adaptation of the graphic novel “Deadly Class” by Rick Remender and Wes Craig as well as “Nightflyers,” based on the novella by George R.R. Martin. The network also recently launched the series “Krypton” and “Happy!,” the first of which is based on DC Comics characters while the latter is based on the graphic novel of the same name.

I've had some trouble getting into this show. The setting is so depressingly bleak and dystopian. I stopped for a while before the last episode of season one because it seemed to have too much horror. But I started watching again and it's slowly gotten better.

It really is slow to get going, though. Did you even get to the Rocinante yet?

I think if Amazon doesn't pick up either this or the Ringworld show they announced, I'll be dropping Prime when my subscription expires.

Ugh. The press can't report anything right. I've seen way too many old sci-fi shows where they confuse "solar system" with "galaxy".

Unless this is a major, major spoiler? I haven't seen season 3 yet.

There IS a second, looser definition of "galaxy," though it would not be assumed in this context: "Any large and brilliant or impressive assemblage of persons or things."

The Expanse meets this definition, imo.

Sometimes the depressing and bleakness is beautiful though! It was one of my favorite aspects about the SciFi version of Battlestar Galactica, probably the last great hard science TV show before The Expanse.

I wouldn't call the show dystopian at all. Plausible, yes. Earth hasn't been destroyed. No major catastrophes other than the show hook. I means sea level has risen and major overpopulation, but that's all stuff that we see today. Much better than something like star trek where the show's premise for the federation is basically human nature has changed.
