OMG WTF POS Again first Dark matter and now this and it was just getting real good the last couple episodes. And there is tons of advertising going on as well. Kind puts a pause on wanting to watch the rest of the season they should of waited till after to make an announcement?

Hey guys we got great shows let's cancel them!

But I still find it funny that they make a big deal of their gravity boots and than minutes later its showing them pouring coffee lol.

Oh no?

In a way, not unexpected. The show is doing great but live viewership is probably always going to be weak.

Netflix or Amazon could really make this a smash hit, I hope they or a cable network like HBO picks this up.

I asked the same question when DM was canceled never got a answer has some other network, or whatever picked up a sci fi show?

So stupid to announce that now, the show ratings will get even worse? I guess they got whatever advertisement $$ already.

I really have no idea how they can justify this. It's like the highest rated Sci-Fi on right now, and among the highest rated that's ever come out, with solid viewership. But hey, let's pull the plug and make room for something stupid that nobody will give a shit about. How about another time slot for the Walking Disappointment.

I mean c'mon, this is the same station that produced four Sharknado movies. SHARKNADO.

I swear, nobody should produce anything through any medium outside of Netflix, I'm so sick of traditional networks.

It's embarrassing. Wednesday's episode got a 9.6 on IMDB. Nothing gets a 9.6 on IMDB. 90% on RT, 95% from audience. They should be falling over themselves to produce more seasons, stretching it like HBO does with GOT. But nah it's cool we'll do another comedy show or something with zombies or w/e. People will eat that garbage up.

http://deadline.com/2018/05/the-expanse-canceled-syfy-after-three-seasons-to-be-shopped-1202388026/

"The Expanse transported us across the solar system for three brilliant seasons of television,” said Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “Everyone at Syfy is a massive fan of the series, and this was an incredibly difficult decision. We want to sincerely thank The Expanse’s amazing cast, crew and all the dedicated creatives who helped bring James S.A. Corey’s story to life. And to the series’ loyal fans, we thank you most of all.”

The Expanse was one of the first series greenlighted after the change in programming direction at Syfy, signaling a return to the network’s roots with the sweeping space opera series in the vein of Battlestar Galactica. The Expanse, from Alcon and the Sean Daniel Co, which was tipped as a potential successor to BSG, was part of a crop of Syfy series that launched in 2015 along with The Magicians, which was recently renewed for a fourth season, and 12 Monkeys, which was renewed for an upcoming fourth and final season.

The Expanse is one of the most well reviewed sci-fi series on TV, with the current third season scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (vs. 95% for Season 2 and 76% for Season 1).

The cancellation decision by Syfy is said to be linked to the nature of its agreement for the series, which only gives the cable network first-run linear rights in the U.S. That puts an extraordinary amount of emphasis on live, linear viewing, which is inherently challenging for sci-fi/genre series that tend to draw the lion’s share of their audiences from digital/streaming.

The Expanse‘s Live+3 linear ratings started with 581,000 among adults 18-49 and 1.378 million total viewers in Season 1. Season 2 slipped to 457K in 18-49 and 1.05M viewers; Season 3 to date is running just below the Season 2 averages, at 400K and 1 million, respectively. That is below the performance of Syfy’s top dramas The Magicians and Krypton, as well as comedy Happy!, but in line with a number of co-productions on the network.

“We are very disappointed the show will not be returning to Syfy,” said Alcon Entertainment co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. “We respect Syfy’s decision to end this partnership but given the commercial and critical success of the show, we fully plan to pursue other opportunities for this terrific and original IP.”

Co-created and written by Oscar-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men), the series is based on the bestselling book series by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey). The cast includes Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams and Thomas Jane."

Per this link it appears that the show was killed over the contract issues, which is the only thing that makes sense..

word is that the Expanse was cancelled due to the nature of the contract with Alcon Television Group, who finances and produces the series. The agreement Syfy had for the series only gave them the first-run linear rights in the United States. Meaning the network needed the fans to watch the live broadcast, which is not where the majority of the audience for a show like this comes from. Most genre series tick up quite a bit after the initial airing when played on-demand or streaming. Syfy got none of that.

It's like you guys missed that I shared that same deadline article, which also states the very same information about it being an issue over production rights.

lol

Because it has a production team behind it already, I don't fear for this show. I think another network or media group will snap it up quick.
Honestly, I don't doubt Netflix won't try, but it's always possible this Alcon group could end up playing hard ball and even scare them off (or they may loathe streaming services in general, leaving it only to other cable networks). But if Netflix wants it I don't think there's a cost they won't pay. They have been desperately trying to bring the true A+ sci-fi to their platform and keep kind of falling a little short. The Expanse is already under way, is a critically acclaimed series already, based on a critically acclaimed and lengthy book series that guarantees at least a handful of future seasons.

Hell, this seems like the perfect storm for Netflix to save the day. I very much hope it happens. Being able to binge it would be amazing but when it's aired weekly I'm happy too, something new to watch every week.

Wow, that's a pretty messed up deal.

As the unofficial ATOT keeper of SyFy Friday, I've been burnt by the network more than most of the nerds here. And yet still, I don't think I can fault SyFy for this one. Any deal in this day and age where a network is fronting the lion's share of costs for a show - especially such an expensive show - and not getting digital/streaming rights is a deal that's doomed to fail in the long run. Genre shows naturally have small audiences; you can't build them on the backs of only a fraction of the audience. (And it pretty much makes SyFy saints for funding an expensive show like this for 3 years under these conditions )

Which raises a side question: what has the production company been doing with all the money they've been getting if they're not having to share it with SyFy?

I honestly think nobody needs to worry about getting burnt on this one - this isn't really a series getting canceled, it's SyFy saying we're done being the network to air the show. This type of situation means the production company is still very pleased with the product and I believe total viewership is really great for the product, so I don't think it will be long until we find out that a new home will be more than happy to air the show (perhaps with greater capability to get a better contract).

Daniel over at spacedock did a piece on this trying to get folks to petition Amazon and Netflix to pick it up for the next season.

The other seasons are already on Amazon. I'd wager they are a really strong contender to bring it on board.
