The US Silverstars do not last very long. They have a nice color, but are not very bright. Next time, I think I will go with Phillips Vision Plus or Sylvania Xtravision.

I've heard that, but I've had a pair of low beam bulbs in my Jimmy for over a year and a half and they're still going strong.

I put some silverstar sealed beams in, and they're good 6 mos later. I'll report back if anything goes wrong in the near future.

They really make a nice differance when driving in the dark.

As for the logevity issue, I don't quite know what you are talking about. Are you sure you did not get a tiny spec of dirt or an invisible amount of oil on the glass when you installed them?

Because I work the late shift, I use my headlamps more than most people. Most of my driving is done with my lights on and I have been using the same silverstar lights bulbs for 3+ years now and have not had any issues with them.

I agree with Triggerhappy007. Most of the reviews/comments I've read online regarding Silverstar longevity is that they last on average for about 6-8 months. Some people have had them last longer (1 yr +), but those people were in the minority.

If you're looking for brighter bulbs, go with the Xtravisions.... definitely will last a lot longer and are about as bright as the Silverstars.

I sometimes wonder if the longevity issue is from some things..........the people who have problems are the loudest to complain, possibly a poor install job, and maybe a bad production run. I'm not doubting some of the issues some have had, but I've run two sets and pulled the low beams from a Mitsubishi Galant I'd installed a set of low beam bulbs in as a backup pair for my Jimmy (both vehicles used the same bulbs for high and low beams), because of the longevity issues I'd seen after I bought them. The backup set are still in their package, collecting dust while the Jimmy's bulbs burn brightly.

I did get a little less than 2 years, but I drove a little under average. I'm positive I did not touch the bulb or touched it against the headlamp. My bulb (9003) has hi/low and the low beam went out, the high beam was still working. If anyone is looking for the Xtravision, they're on sale at Pepboys for $9.99 AR for 2.

This is in their FAQ:

Q) How long do SilverStar headlights last?

A) The life of any halogen bulb will depend upon your vehicle type and how much you drive. However, all halogen headlights dim over time. That?s why we recommend replacing headlights in pairs about once a year, before they burn out.

Hmm, I wonder if they say that because they know the Silverstar fails after one year.

I have silverstars in my car now. I actually took 9005 bulbs and modified them for my foglights to fit the 9006 slot. Even with the modification and I run my bulbs EVERY time i drive my car (which is at least an hour a day - everyday -- I always drive with foglights/parking lights on at the least) and I've had them for 4 months so far no problems. Although it's early to say.. considering I've dremelled mine and everything else they are holding up alright. Just gotta take care of them (handle with gloves, keep clean, etc)

I installed them in my 2006 Subaru B9 Tribeca. The passenger side bulb blew out in a few months. I replaced it and it blew out in another few months. I installed the bulbs that come with the SUV and they have been fine.

Damn, my car is 6+ years old and my stock head lamps are going strong. Why would anyone need to replace headlamps each year?

Not to thread crap, but pep boys seems to always have them on sale for around $29 and then also has a $10 MIR. If you are going to go buy some, just check pep boys' latest ad on their site first. I did take advantage of the 25% off wiper blades at advanced auto parts. Not sure if that is still going on. To be thorough I checked the pep boys ad and in my area they have the 2 pack of Silverstar Ultras for $29 after rebate($15 MIR). I know last week the regular Silverstars were on sale for $19 after MIR because my wife bought some.

Good deal. Did not know about the Ultras, are they even brighter?

Silverstars should have a 1 year warranty, so keep your receipt. If the bulb goes out in less then one year, you will get a free replacement. I have not had any problems with mine for about a year and a half.

Edit: Anybody else have good experience with other bright bulbs? I don't know about anybody else, but I care about having white light. Purple tinted lights of many HIDs just kill my eyes, but I can always try to avoid them. Once I drove a car with slightly purple HIDs and I was practically blind. What is the maximum color temperature with no hint of blue or purple, but just white?

Thanks

I've always been tempted to buy a pair of HID look-a-likes just because they look "cool". Though, honestly I have no real purpose for it, I'm guessing my stock lights will last me a loooooong time. Although it wouldn't hurt to have an extra set for that occasion, thanks, nice post OP.

From what ive seen on HID kits that are on sale .. 4300K - 6000K is the best vision .. any higher you get blue'er lights and then to purple ..

I just ordered 2 HID kits off Ebay. I chose 5000k bulbs which are WHITE with just a tiny tiny hint of blue.

Got them for $111 a piece. They appeared to be high quality. Hopefully USPS delivers them tomorrow.

I wouldn't install these in my car if they were free. I'll leave it at that. I'm tired of explaining why.

This is actually very debatable. There's a question as to what is the definition of "white" in the first place. From Wikipedia:

In the science of lighting, there is a continuum of colors of light that can be called "white". One set of colors that deserve this description are the colors emitted, via the process called incandescence, by a black body at various relatively-high temperatures. For example, the color of a black body at a temperature of 2848 kelvins matches that produced by domestic incandescent light bulbs. It is said that "the color temperature of such a light bulb is 2848 K". The white light used in theatre illumination has a color temperature of about 3200 K. Daylight has a nominal color temperature of 5400 K (called equal energy white), but can vary from a cool red up to a bluish 25,000 K. Not all black body radiation can be considered white light: the background radiation of the universe, to name an extreme example, is only a few kelvins and is quite invisible.

See also the "Color temperature" article on Wikipedia. Also, look at the charts on this page:

http://casa.colorado.edu/~ajsh/colour/Tspectrum.html

How this looks depends on your monitor setup, but on my laptop display (and other monitors that I've used with this same test) the whitest white appears to me to be between 6000K and 7000K. To others this may appear too blue. If your monitor is calibrated to 5000K then that will probably be the "whitest" that you see while 6000K will appear more blue.

Not "about as bright" but exactly the same brightness. Check the spec' on Sylvania's site. As far as I could tell the only difference is that the Silverstars have a bluish tint.
