Symantec upgrade confusion

I've been running SEP11 for a few months. Not impressed, too large of a footprint for started. Way too much processing overhead. And after having it set to auto install/update on client machines, I still find a fair number that requires a manual run of the managed install package.

I'm looking into moving to Trend Micro if the price is the same and/or less I'm done with SEP. Not to mention, still hasn't helped on virus prevention on too many times to count over the last few months.

Goosemaster you are 100% wrong. SEP 12 is the Small Business Edition. It is not and never was planned to be an upgrade for Enterprise Edition customers. You want MR4-MP1 (currently) and MR2 (shortly)

Our next major release 12.1 is an upgrade for both SBE (12.0) and EE (11.x and prior) customers. Our next 11.x release MR4-MP2 is pretty much in sync with the SBE 12.x release (e.g. all of my performance fixes, etc are in 12.0 and MR4-MP2).

Grab MP4-MR2 when we release it, its the version I'll run at home (had to fix lots of stuff before I would say that)

Do you know when MP4-MR2 will be released?
Also, will it be easy to upgrade from the version right before to MR2?

After some difficulty I have been installing and deploying SEP 11 to all of my users. It is working pretty well and doesn't really slow down performance much even on older machines, at least that I've seen so far. It definitely is better (more options anyway) than the old version, but it does have a big learning curve.

The only major issue is that sometimes the remote push doesn't work but for that i just manually install.

Target is June I believe, but I can double check. It's a straight upgrade deployment from the older 11.x, so no surprises.

For those that don't know, I moved over to the SEP team as the chief architect on Jan 1. Yes the product has things that need to be fixed and yes, I'm fixing them If you look at what we did with the consumer products from 07 to 09 you'll have some idea of the direction I'm heading with SEP.

So, send me your hate mail, issues, etc. Just understand I'm 4 months in and it will take time to see issues directly addressed (but they will be)

Define before I started there creating Norton Desktop for Windows and have worked on quite a large number of projects since. From 98-05 I was in mergers and acquisitions, from 05-08 I worked in the CTO office on research (my background is in antimalware), speaking, and various projects (such as the plans to revamp the consumer team).

Thanks for the clarification bsobel. I didn't mean to spread misinformation.

I believe i've asked this before, but have the compatibility issues with JRE 1.6 update 10+ been fixed for the console?


If I make one recommendation:

Documentation states that central execptions for application such as exchange are automated. I believe it would be appropriate to display these automated exceptions in the central execption client area, prehaps greyed out.

Yes, i'd like to know about the JRE issue also.

One very nice thing I noticed about the SEP11 is that the scheduled full computer scans, when they run, they don't slow down my pc noticeably at all which is very cool!!

According to support the it was fixed sometime after MR4 and MR4 MP1a.

FYI, I installed the latest version and it hasn't been fixed at least for me. I was running JRE 6 update 13 and it didn't work so i reinstalled 7 which worked.
