i think my tv might be approaching the end of its life, what are some typical symptoms??

Why don't you tell us the symptoms and we'll tell you if it's dying, rather than us trying to guess at something we can't see, don't know the brand or model number of, and have no idea how old it is?

Symptoms that your tv may be dying

symptom 1) if you think your tv may be dying, it may be dying
symptom 2) it'll post a black and white image, then gradually acquire color
symptom 3) image will be distorted and full of static, but will return to normal if hit hard enough

well, it'll post a black and white image, then gradually acquire color. the image will be distorted and full of static, but will return to normal if i hit it hard enough. these all occur while watching satellite. i haven't tried watching a DVD on it, but I have two rooms hooked up to the satellite and the second TV is functioning properly.

A couple things to look for:

1. No image appears on screen.
2. TV does not turn on.

When the screen is a "tornado coming" kind of green with about 5 diagonal lines running through it (no picture other than that) and it shuts off within about 5 seconds.

At least that's what one of mine did.

When my TV was on its last leg, the image turned blue. Apparantly the red and green stopped working.

it's an old tv though. 32" from the mid 80s, so i give it some credit. maybe this'll be an excuse to get an HDTV. w00t.

Surprised a Sony lasted that long - we had a Sony we bought in the early 80s that crapped out in less than 10 years, and a 15" Sony that lasted less than 5 years. But anyway, HDTV rocks. I never gave it a chance before and now it just blows my mind. Enjoy whatever tv you get

My silver 32' Toshiba now has Horizontal lines that jump up and down on and off all through a cable program and videos. Not sure how old it is. I got used 4 years ago. Worth trying to mess with or adjust or time to up grade?

or......Does this mean its slowly dying?

One example is when you see a very bright line in the middle of the screen that is very bright, good indication the tube just lost it's y axis control, and thus, the TV is dying. I've seen that happen, it's kinda odd. My dad has watched entire hockey games like that till he finally got a new one.

Another thing is when the dials get hard to turn or don't make contact properly it can do weird things, but you can take that apart and clean it.

Considering the age of this thread I'm going to assume we're talking about tube TVs here.

Usually the Mod's will lock this type of thread as a "necro" thread, that being it was posted way back in '04. Keep that in mind when you do searches. As for the TV, CRT tubes get "soft" as they age and it will look blurry and out of focus, not worth repairing, just buy a new LCD or plasma and enjoy HDTV. If your really short on $$ you can find used CRT sets on Craigslist for around $20-40.

Hold the back of your hand close to the speakers and check if you can feel it breathing.

Have you checked the sweep tube? when you open up the TV you can see in the tube diagram. Take it to your 7-11 tube tester and have it checked out.
