When I was looking around last year for a new ring for my wife there were three main companies that made actual lab created diamonds. None of them were cheaper than buying a high quality diamond from bluenile.com though.

Gemeis
Apollo Diamond
And I forgot the name of the third.

Here's an article on MSN about them.

I could be wrong, but I think lab grown diamonds are equal to, if not more expensive than the ones found in the ground. The problem, if you want to call it that, with lab grown ones is that they haven't quite perfected clear ones. So you'll find yellows, pinks, blues and things of that nature. They won't be cheap. Search around the net and you'll find a few resellers.

I am willing to pay MORE to ensure my diamond doesn't come from DeBeers. I hope this settles any of those type of questions. I think however, they might be a tad cheaper but this is not my concern... the concern is where to get a REAL diamond that is synthetic.

I think all synthetic diamonds (true man made diamonds) are yellow. I don't think they can make clear diamonds yet.

Buy a Canadian Polar Bear diamond if you don't want to support DeBeers.

If you are looking for the real lab created diamonds, those haven't made it to market in any quantity yet. Apollo Diamond was discussed in this Wired article as being one of the few companies in the world able to create a perfect gem-quality diamond. In fact, the diamonds they create are so perfect that gemologists are able to tell they are synthetic because even the most perfect natural diamond has some microscopic flaws.

Another company called Gemesis (also discussed in the Wired article) has their product on the market, but mostly in fancy colors (yellow, red, blue). Their synthetic diamonds are also not perfect like Apollos', but still high-grade.

I don't think they are cheaper, because they aren't produced in any kind of volume. They aren't grown overnight...

Scribe, you CAN NOT purchase a clear synthetic diamond at the present moment. apollo has not begun selling them to the public yet. however, everyone believes they will be the first company to have the capability to do so.

you can buy colored diamonds from places like gemesis (ironically, these are more valuable than clear diamonds)

the diamonds that apollo will make use vapor deposition. the stone is without flaw, and completely perfect. jewelers are able to distinguish them from regular diamonds in that the synthetic ones are 'too perfect'

not just yellow, but other colors as well - these are the ones you can buy (e.g. gemesis).

they have made clear diamonds, but have not marketed them for public sale yet

Waaah...waaah...diamonds are a blood trade!

Get over yourself. Diamond mining is not nearly as horrible as people want to believe it is, there are much worse atrocities out there. If you're going to pick something to be upset about try one of the other of dozens of hot-button celebrity causes.

Diamond mining along with european imperialism in the 19th and 20th centuries across Africa have left over a billion people with $h!t.

Woah, woah, woah. People are free to not want to buy diamonds from deBeers if they want. It's not like they're asking you to do anything. Calm down and let them have their cause.

Sure there are. But I have moral standards and apparently, you don't. So regardless of what the celebrities are yelling about, I'm sticking to this plan of action.

Last I checked it wasn't Europeans or diamond companies that were committing genocide all across Africa currently. And I'm sure that their own leaders selling them out and constantly stealing whatever aid we send to line their own pockets helped a lot. Face it, the vast majority of Africa just downright sucks, but do you honestly think they still have people with pick-axes down in little mine shafts getting their diamonds for them? How inefficient would that be? Most of the bigger companies use large machinery for the actual mining, the ones that are the worst are the mines controlled by warlords and local rebel leaders. The fact that DeBeers is willing to deal with them isn't too nice, but it's just a fact of life, kind of like how we buy oil from countries that treat women like slaves and allow them to be executed for being rape victims. Why don't you go boycott gasoline?

No you don't get it, a synthetic man made diamond is a fake. There is no such thing as a "real" synthetic diamond

It's synthetic because it's man made. It's a "real diamond" because its molecular composition is the same as diamond that you dig out of the ground. It's just as hard, just as clear (or moreso) has the same atoms making the same bonds.

Diamond: A crystal made up of 99.95% pure carbon atoms arranged in an isometric, or cubic, crystal arrangement.

Because nobody is willing to let us build a new nuclear reactor. I can buy identical diamonds from non-natural sources. Where can I get an alternative automotive fuel with the same capabilities?

the more you open your mouth, the more stupid you sound. your comment "the vast majority of Africa just downright sucks" proves that.

From what I'm seeing in this thread, you can't buy man-made diamonds that are identical to real ones yet, and when you will be able to they'll be few and far inbetween, and more expensive than real ones. They're starting to ramp up e85 production, which is domestically grown, and although not identical to foreign oil is a good alternative. Electric cars have been out for years, and although more expensive to buy and operate it seems that people are willing to pay more for something that doesn't involve "blood" in its production or trade.

Well, from the bottom of the sahara to the top of SA, it pretty much does. Wars, poverty, disease, suffering. It's a shame, and I hope it gets fixed, but that seriously sucks.

That was my whole point. I'm not saying it to be mean, but Africa is a continent with many many problems.

1. It seems more like the next year or so will see availability.
2. Predictions all seem to point to a lower market price than for natural ones
3. If that's the case, volume will be relatively large.
4. Electric cars are not a viable alternative to gasoline ones. The synthetic diamonds are identical to natural ones.

that i will agree with. its amazing how something is worded can mean and come across as something completely different. africa is an amazing continent with a natural beauty, cultural diversity and history like no other place on this earth.
