Damascus is about to fall and the 15 year long civil war is reaching a new mile stone.

Syria was a doomed project since Sykes-Picot agreement between UK and France. The common divide and conquer strategy was implemented on sectorial division of 15% Alawites ruling the rest of the country, in the dictatorship of the Assad family.

Now the current plan is to eliminate all risks for Israel. Assad had Iran as the #1 supporter with Russia and this allowed Iran to project power in the region over Lebanon (Lebanon is like the extension of Syria logistically). So Assad is soon to be gone

The new power players are the HTS (supported by Israel & USA - Radical Sunni Fighters),the SNA (Supported by Turkiye), SDF/YPG (Kurds) Supported by Israel and USA.

After Assad is eliminated there will be a deeply divided country. Turkiye hosts around 6 million Syrians who fled after 2011. There will be a lot to discuss so I think the topic deserves one of its own

How many are fighting each other? Hopefully they'll stop fighting for awhile. Russia being out of there likely will help things.

The US backs the SDF not HTS.
Sorry, Turkiye supports SNA (Syrian National Army) and US supports SDF. Similar TLAs in different languages. HTS gets (unofficial) support because it has a pact with SDF

Yeah they probably get some limited clandestine help due to this. No equipment or US planes running air support for them though.

Russia has a naval base in Tartus. This is going to be a game changer for them. No more warm water bases.

Is there any will in the Middle East to redraw lines along more tribal boundaries or has it been long enough that there is national pride? I know the Kurds have been hoping for a homeland but they don't have to give up anything.

I wonder why Russia isn’t bailing Assad out this time…
because Assad and the Syrian regime are idiots, russia armed 2 mechanized corps for Assad and he turmed them over to the Alawite militias instead of the army....remember the old saying from ww1 about lions lead by donkeys? while the individual arab soldiers are brave fighters, almost all the leadership of arab armies are rife with nepotism and kleptocracy (look at the saudi/uae army in yemen)

also funny how these salafists are now the 'good guys' while still on terrorist lists across the world

stranger still is how much this help out the fascist in israel

I would have preferred stability in Syria.
Tell the guy we'll lift the bounty if his only targets are Assad and Russia.

I think Putin was right when he described the US as a collapsing empire ... It's just that Russia is collapsing faster. Much much faster.

Probably not. Turkey is not in favor of any form of Kurdistan, lest they have to cede some of their own territory. They fear an unfriendly neighbor, because the Kurds have not been particularly friendly to Turkey after the whole human rights issues faced by Kurdish people living in Turkey.

Damascus is falling as we write here
Heck.
That was fast.

They pre positioned rebel forces South of the capital then. Laying in wait after drawing their attention north. Very smart tactics being used. And apparently not a lot of will or resources on part of Assad's military. By all accounts, Syria has fallen today. Just a clean up operation / squishing any pockets, and establishing a new order. I hope the people can find peace.

Rebels appear to have entered Damascus, resident says, as Assad regime’s defenses collapse

“Militarily, Damascus has fallen,” a source familiar with the rebels’ advance told CNN.
Rebel forces appear to have entered the Syrian capitol of Damascus, one resident told CNN, as the Assad regime’s defenses showed signs of collapsing.
“The rebels are in Barzeh,” a neighborhood inside Damascus city, the resident told CNN, adding that clashes were currently taking place.
“I saw rebel fighters moving through the inner alleys of Barzeh toward Police Club Street, and I can hear very loud sounds of clashes. The electricity is cut off, and the internet is very weak, people are staying at their houses.”

Yay! One more country badly broken, with associated humanitarian crisis, and taken over by militant islamists.

And yet once again, this show is brought to you courtesy of the red, white and blue... (admittedly as a more modest contributor than in prior instances)

Perhaps that was the reason why the Syrian Army melted recently, I think the army was loyal to Assad which was why he managed to cling on to power unlike other Arab leaders who were deposed during the Arab Spring. By favoring Alawite militias, it annoyed the army and they abandoned him.

Other parties decisions, both friends and foes, made this particular bed mostly without our help.

It's NOT our fight...we should stay out of it.
What fight? It's over.

After 14 years of Civil War, propped up by Iran and Russia with terrible massacres against the Syrian people, the Arab Spring has finally come to Syria.
Just hope they can find the peace they've been looking for.
