I have friend whose system was working until we took it apart to install new ram. Hooked it back up, just get a constant beeping. All cables are in correctly, took back out the new stick of ram and reset the existing stick several times, but nothing. It wont boot at all and nothing on the monitor, just blank. The reason I was wondering if it was the cpu is that he said it had a growling noise lately (fan I'm assuming) and I noticed the fan was really sloppy.

Anyway, appreciate any input or suggestions. Thanks

It was just long beeps from the moment we turned it on. It was built at a local puter shop but it has an intel chipset and runs a 400 celly.

You may want to find out who makes his mobo and what model mobo he has .. I know the old IBM standard for a continuous beep would be a Power Supply, Motherboard, or Keyboard error.

I know that on my Abit boards, a constant repeating beep was a memmory error (BH6 and KT7-Raid) (award bios)

If the PC has an AMI or Phoenix bios I am pretty sure there are standard beep code charts for those .. Buh Im pretty sure that Most Companies that use Award Bioses designate their different beep codes (not too sure on that though)

Good luck!

If we knew the motherboard, we could find out what BIOS it's using. Usually it's AMI, Phoenix or AWARD. With that, we can get the beep codes. Most likely your friend needs to reseat either his AGP card or his memory...those things are always getting loose.

Yeah, I'd double-check the video card and make sure it's correctly seated.

Did the mobo flex alot when you put the memory in? Sometimes you can bust lans when you install memory if it isn't properly mounted in the case.

Do as earlier suggested and reseat all of the cards. I would physically remove them and reseat.

Good luck figuring it out..........

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I cannot find the mobo maker anywhere, but I do know it has the award bios and intel chipset. I did put a new stick of ram in, but took back out and put back in, still with consistant long beeps and no picture. And also, video and sound are integrated.

You have tried only the old memory again? (restoring it to when it worked)

If everything is back to original placement (all reseated) then you need to start looking at what you could of done when you was inside. Unplug a fan? Move the heatsink? Hurt the motherboard? Bend the pins on the dimm sockets by wiggling the dimm as it went in?

Did you install the right kind of memory for you motherboard? I would assume it to be compatible with SDRAM (PC66 and above) since your running a celery, but you should check carefully to see what your old memory was. I believe some mobo's had a voltage jumper for the memory (some of the older stuff use to use a different voltage), but I wouldn't think anything that could run a 400 celery could of used it, but I may be wrong.

it'd help a lot to get the beep codes. otherwise it's just guess work. you might start punching in motherboard serial and part numbers in google - that may get you the manufacturer and model. and if you want to just stick with the guess work, resetting the bios may help.
