It has a good rep, but personally I've been have some difficulty with upgrading with it. I haven't run a memtest on it yet, but I think I really have a mobo issue more than memory. I have a two year old Asus A7N8X-Deluxe and the whole rig just dosen't want to run a 200Mhz FSB with PC3200. Still a work in progess.

All of that aside, PDP, also called Patriot, isn't selling you a big brand name and all of the marketing that goes with it. I'll bet that is a significant part of the price difference. I believe they use the Samsung TCCD chips that most of the other vendors use, so your buying very similar stuff to the big brands.

This is what I have come up with, going to order pretty soon but any additional feedback would be appreciated. I am planning on overclocking also.

AMD 3200+ (90nm) - getting combo from monarch with free HL2 and Far Cry
MSI Neo Plat 2
Patriot Dual Channel Kit DDR PC-3200 w/ XBL Technology
eVGA 128 AGP 6800nu
Samsung 160 GB SATA HD
Nec 3500a DVD±RW
NV Silencer 5
Thermalright XP-90 (with Panaflo 92mm L1B)

Antec 3000B case
Seasonic Super Silencer PSU (400w)

Slade,
That looks very similar to what I plan to order in about 3 weeks.

I really like the mem. I have been considering going with the nf4 board but thats really the only major change. If I do that I'll go with the 6600 GT pci-E card from Leadtek.

It's unlikely that there will be a significant enough difference with the Raptor to warrant the much greater expense, but go for it if you must. It'll work on most modern motherboards, just as long as they have SATA.

Even though this was 4 months ago, it was bad advice then, too. I still own a Pioneer DVD-RW, but these days they are slightly inferior and slightly more expensive than most of the competition. Absolute unqualified statements like this make me wonder about the guides ... although I agree with almost everything except the obnoxious signature.

It's not that I don't agree with the signature, actually. I don't like Bush. I didn't vote for Bush. All the people around here who put politics into their signatures are still stupid, though. Keep it to the politics forum for God's sake. People don't want to see "I hate Bush" a billion times in every single thread they click on. I'm sure I'm not the only person who comes here to get away from politics.

Seriously, what kind of response do you people want for your ridiculous political signatures? Are you trying to influence people's political decisions in a computer hardware forum? That certainly doesn't make sense. I'm sure 99% of people who see them are just thinking, "Get over it," or "Shut up," or "Leave the damn country if you're so dissatisfied." A signature is a place for you to say, "Go Red Sox!" or something equally silly, not try to alienate everybody. The elections are over but the comments just won't end, at least not at AT. I swear, I'm so sick of just the word Bush. I wouldn't care if people were posting "Yay for abortion!" in their sigs, but enough is enough with the maniacal Bush ranting.

(p.s. if you think this rant is off-topic, your sig probably is, too)

Holy buckets, I think you need to switch to decaf coffee. That was WAY more off topic than an innocent little signature (one that I agree with). You clearly seem a little on edge, and perhaps need to take a break from the computer.
Besides, politics don't alienate everyone nowadays, they just alienate 50 percent of everyone

I'm trying to build my first PC and I would like to have it anticipate some of the upcoming technology so I'm not upgrading often (seems to be a recurring theme with PC-users huh?)...anyway my goals are:

Athlon 64
PCI-E Graphics Card and Motherboard
Sufficient RAM and HD Space and Speed (probably SATA HD)
Sufficient Cooling
Primary use will be gaming.
Total Price ~$1000, this is without OS and Display

I understand the basics such as the general amount of RAM and HD Space I will need, but I'm not for sure when it comes to compatibility between parts. Also I'd like to add that usually these forums are pretty informative for me, but when I came here to read up on PCI-E vid card and motherboards all I saw was everyone going nuts about the new nforce4 Asus board and using 2 graphics cards with it...baiscally the whole motherboard forum is littered with topics about this. If someone could give a practical explanation of what I should use and expect from PCI-E that would be great, becuase I'm obviously not spending $1000 on a motherboard and 2 graphics cards in this system.

Thanks in advance guys.

I bumped the bogus guide, figured I ought to bump the good one!

Kudos for what I know to be a tremendous amount of work (I have a few failed guides of my own for other topics sitting on my desktop right now).

If you have an issue with his sig send him a PM. Don't post it here quite as it is quite off-topic.
I would tell you what I think but again thats off-topic.

Lets stick to the hardware guide.
