System does not boot!

I have purchased a new processor (AMD Phenom 9850 Black Edition) and a new GPU (XFX Nvidia GTX 260) (and btw, its a BIG ASS CARD!!! I have a gigabyte 3D aurora casing and it barely managed to fit in there after alot of prying!!!) ... So back to the problem, I installed these parts myself and now, when I turn on my system, it does not boot. It stays on for 3-5 seconds and then switches off with 1 beep sound fading away as the system shuts off.

Have i installed the HSF wrongly?
Does it matter if the fastening clip is on the left or right of the processor???
Do i need to flash my bois for the new processor? ( My previous processor is the AMD
Athlon 3500+)

Now, I must inform everyone that i initially installed the HSF with the fastening clip on the side facing the front of the system but then remembered that the fan was installed with the clip facing the rear so i pulled it off and put it the other way. I noticed the gel below the HSF was a lttle smudged. It was only on for a minute in 1 direction before i changed directions.

I have uploaded pics here.

I have a 650W SilverStone PSU. I dont think the power is the problem. I swapped my RAM chips to the other ports as well.

All fans are running, CPU, Chassis and GPU

My mobo is Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe wireless edition, I am running 4 SATA HDD's, 2 DVD Combo drives. I have a Soundblaster X-Fi Soundcard and a pinnacle TV Tuner. Corsair XMS2 (2x1GB) Ram sticks.

XP Installed.

Please help me im freaking out rite now! ...

Put your old video card in and see if it boots. If it doesn't put your old CPU in. If it works you either damaged the chip or do in fact need to update the BIOS(more likely).

If a BIOS update is needed to support your new processor (I'm not familiar with your board) you are SOL without a working processor. You do not have ANY other video card that can go into this PC?

you'll need the old CPU to do the BIOS update to hopefully allow the new CPU to work. I hope you'll remember this the next time you rush upgrading a system.

ok now im in trouble because i have to source a processor! ... ok just a quick query ...

when i remove the HSF and change the processor, do i also have to buy thermal paste to use when i am replacing the processor again?

If it is mandatory, which one should i get???

thx.

I found this link ... useful.

http://forums.amd.com/forum/me...tid=318&threadid=97094

Thankfully i have a 1.03. So my only concern is now to get a processor so i can flash my bios.

You may be able to get away not doing anything to the HSF when you put an older chip in it for the flashing process, but I would highly recommend cleaning the new chip and the entire HSF with alcohol and reapplying fresh compound to the new chip after the flashing is complete. As for the type of compound Arctic Silver seems to be a universal answer, and should cost like $5-$10 but the tube should hold enough for 2-3 processors, and maybe more (been awhile since I used it).

okay! ... I took the system to the asus service centre here and got the BIOS flashed to the new version.

NEW PROBLEM:

Now there is no display when the system is switched on. I am running 2x1GB CORSAIR XMS2-6400 800Mhz RAM chips on my system. When swapped out with other capacities of RAM (say, 512mb), viola! its working! ... Now I dont want to get rid of these RAM chips.

I have tried using all 4 RAM slots with both 1 and 2 RAM chips but it just seems to have some kind of conflict with the 1GB capacity.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

THX.

trying upping the RAM voltage a little bit before reinstalling your corsair sticks. Boot up with the working RAM and up the voltage to 2 volts, then shut down and install your corsair kit. Try 2.1 volts if that doesn't work. Those sticks might just need a little more voltage than the standard 1.8.

I also see a problem you have 2 power sources connected to at least 1 of the HDD's in picture 06082008564. I don't see any shots of where the video card up close like the 3 you did for the CPU. I think you have more problems than you either know or will admit and looks like another example of why rushing to buy the latest and greatest is not always the wisest move.

The technician at the ASUS service centre says that he has encountered a similar problem with that family of motherboards and that it needs a Northbridge replacement ... I have left it with him and he said it will be up and running by tomorrow ...

robisbell,

as far as the HDD's go, there isnt any HDD with 2 power sources connected. The power next to the SATA is just dangling there, there is no connection.

As for the video card, why is it necessary if we established that it is not the cause of the problem. I am a simpleton when it comes to the total intricacies of computer hardware, and I am here to learn like many others. Your guidance and support will take me a long way if only you can tell me what it is that you exactly want from me... simply passing remarks like "I think you have more problems than you either know or will admit and looks like another example of why rushing to buy the latest and greatest is not always the wisest move." are very counter-productive.

But thanq for all your help, i did learn alot... will post back with the final results of my mobo ...

nope, the 2nd HDD down the SATA and molex power are both plugged into the drive, in the picture. as for why, when you ask for help and omit a critical part considering and I quote "it barely managed to fit in there after alot of prying!!!" that is another avenue that you've left un-explored, which could be another issue that may not have been checked out properly and may still affect the system.

So it was a Northbridge replacement that got it up and running?

the only way to replace the Northbridge is to replace the motherboard. so he replaced your motherboard.
