System hang on POST if USB devices are plugged in?

I have a PC with Gigabyte EP45-UD3L

this issue doesn't happen every time, but sometimes it will happen 10 times in a row, sometimes it doesn't happen for a month.

I have the latest Mobo BIOS version available.

Basic behavior is that during POST it will get to the point where it says RAM is all good.. then it just sits there... I can hit CTRL ALT DEL or DEL to go into BIOS no problem, so keyboard is responsive (its a PS2 non USB keyboard).

So if I do a bunch of CTRL ALT DEL eventually it will boot. One way that seems to work is unplugging all USB devices and then hitting CTRL ALT DEL and then it boots fine.

I only have 2 USB devices.. the mouse (MS mouse) and a camera.

It seems like the issues are caused by the mouse? Anyone have anything like this?

Once POST is passed the system is very stable and has no issues, the only problem it will have sometimes is waking up from sleep the mouse will be unresponsive until reboot.

First guess is that your boot sequence is screwing with you, remove the USB boot from the top of the in your BIOS...

The mouse should be connected to the USB port adjacent to the PS/2 port.

I had a system that used to do this with a microsoft mouse, I ended up following the advice novuake has given you and stopped the mobo looking for USB boot hardware and that sorted the problem.

I have issues like this on my foxconn board in my HTPC, sometimes the mouse/kb(wireless on same usb dongle) would cause it to hang on boot.

Removing USB device from the boot order solved the issue.

Why is that? I've noticed that myself with the setup in my sig. If a usb flash drive is plugged into 1 or 2 particular ports, it hangs up at POST, any other port and it boots just fine.

I've been having very slow POST times on my Asus P8Z77-V LX since I added some USB 3.0 external drives. It seems to hang, but if I wait long enough it'll boot normally. I'd also appreciate any suggestions for getting around this (the external drives are the last entries in the boot menu, so I don't think that's the problem).

Found the problem. I only have two rear USB 3.0 ports, so I plugged the third drive into a front panel USB 3.0 port. If that drive is not connected, the machine POST goes back to normal. Must be an implementation flaw in the MB front-facing USB header. I've ordered a powered hub that I'll connect to a rear (Intel) port, so with luck that will solve it.

I normally see this when people have a blackberry plugged in and the boot order has USB devices before hard drives. Lots of BIOSes seem to love thinking the blackberry is a bootable hard drive and just sort of hang until you unplug em and restart. I guess USB 3.0 still has some kinks to work out.

A lot of motherboards with multiple USB 3.0 ports also seem to have them using different drivers. My current motherboard has two ports with a built in controller, and two more that use software-based drivers. Gotta make sure the keyboard/mouse aren't plugged into the wrong ones or it makes it really hard to get into the BIOS
