system hangs

A friend of mine has an emachine. About a month ago he was having problems with a vxd file so got a copy and copied it to the system files but it didn't fix the problem, so I fdisked and format C: /s his hard drive and installed win98se. everything was seemingly ok. But now he tells me it hangs sometimes. sometimes on AOL and some other programs. It boots up ok. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks Mike

What version of AOL is your friend using? I know AOL 6.0 has caused major headaches for a lot of people, so maybe that's your friend's problem. If it is AOL 6.0, try uninstalling it and using version 5.0 to see if the problem goes away.

He's running aol 5.0. I thought the same thing . I heard that a lot of people are having problems with 6.0.

I have an eMachine computer that had the same problem. I installed Windows ME and everything was working fine. I had a sound card and had disabled the onboard audio. I sold my soundcard and went back to onboard sound. At the same time I installed a graphics card and dvd rom. I had constant freezes that happened at any time. After much trouble shooting, I finally pulled out my eMachine restore disk that has Win98se on it. I noticed one little thing at bootup about a Crystal Semiconductor(the type of onboard sound) intialization utility was running. This was not running using WinME. I haven't had a freeze since. Don't know if this will help or not but I thought I would share my experience with you.
