System now freezes during boot

Hi, I was away for a few days and this morning I decided to use my wife's machine to print some photos.

The system starts to boot and then freezes while it is at - PCI device listing.

The last item listed is video controller, however there is nothing posted to the "bus #" next to video controller.

I can get into the bios okay but I can't get pass the " PCI device listings" so I can try to repair windows XP pro (w SP 3 )

The battery is okay since the date and time is correct in the bios.

I assume it is the MBR that is corrupt, but I don't know how to work around to get the system to boot up with the XP system disk.

Any ideas?

If it freezes at PCI device listing i doubt the SO is booting and the mbr is fine... Maybe is a hardware problem.. I've encounted a problem like this and the problem was ram. I've removed on chip and the it worked. I putted back.. It worked.. For 2-3 restarts.
The system makes any sound? Sometimes when a problem occures motherboard beeps (one too three times, or a long one, or any other combination). With this you can check your motherboard manual, maybe you get any clue.

If you've tried booting with the XP system disk and you're still stuck at the PCI device listings, it probably isn't your OS that's the problem.

If that's the case, two questions:

1. Can you remove all PCI devices, except any video card you may need to use? (Does your system have a simple video card on the motherboard?)
2. If that doesn't work, can you reset the BIOS?

The system doesn't make any unusual sounds, it just stops when it is listing the PCI devics.

My machine has a 440bx chipset, Asus P3bf motherboard, no onboard video, it has an agp graphic card.

I disconnected, sound card, removed 1 of 4 memory sticks because it was different than the other 3, removed slave HD.

Now I get an NTLDR error, will try an NTLDR program fix.
