System Resources Question

Is there anyway to increase the system resources? I'm dropping down to 20% and things are getting buggy. After start-up I'm already down to 68% after zone alarm, gator, anti-virus etc.

I have 256 meg ram, but I guess that has nothing to do with the system resources right?

What can be done?

I'm using 98se.

I really wanna clarify this system resource crap that NO ONE understand. I am not a software developement expert but this is what I know.

- Only the actual Program which took the resource can give back to the Operating system. This renders all the 'resource optimisers' useless.

- Resources basically has NOTHING to do with how much ram you have. You could run out of resource by having 512MB of RAM but loading an application which only takes 2MB RAM. Resources divided into a few 'catagories' but one of the catagories are the icons, toolbars, scrollbars.

- Win9x/ME has 64kbyte of resource due to their 16bit limitation. WinNT/2000 has 4GByte resources, basically means you always run out of System Memory first before you run out of resources on NT/2000 systems, (x86 limit) therefore can be considered as having 'unlimited resources'

Thanks for the info.

You obviously have too many things starting up if you are starting with 68%!

Click START > RUN and type MSCONFIG, then select the STARTUP tab... Start removing things in that menu, just use common sense.

I have Z/A, BlackIce, Explorer, Systray running... thats all.

My resources start at 88%. On a clean WinX installation with nothing "added" in the background, you should see 96% to 98%.

It's this bullcrap system resource stuff that caused me to jump ship to Windows 2000 and never look back.

Yep!

Windows 2000 is the nicest O/S out there, I have tried them all. Lets hope they will address the several shortcomings in Win2K when they release XP Pro.

You may find a game or two... I think NFS 5 comes to mind...

What the heck is a "afress install?" hehe

If you have a second hard drive or an extra partition, why not go with a "dual-boot" Win98/Win2K set up. However, I feel after you get use to Win2K... you will be ignoring your Win98.

PS. No matter what/how/when you install an O/S, you should always install it on a fresh format or a "fresh install!"

Sorry, slipped into my native tongue for a second. The english translation for "afress" would be "a fresh" as in "a fresh install".

By the way my native tongue is "Mbweebwee".

Actually, NFS 5 runs fine under Win 2K, all you have to do is set the virtual memory at 256MB minimum and 512MB maximum, cured the problem I was having with NFS 5 not getting past the intro video in Win 2K. Try changing that setting, it should get NFS 5 to work. What DocDoo said about a fresh install is exactly correct, much easier to just format and install 2K on a fresh partition..
