Videocard: BFG 6800 GT OC
Processor: Athlon XP 2600+ 2.2 Ghz
Mainboard: Shuttle AN35/Ultra v1.1
Memory: 2 X 512 PQI PC3200 Turbo Ram
Soundcard: Onboard / Cambridge Soundworks sub-
PSU: Antec TruPower 430w

I recently used system restore to go back 1 month to fix a malware problem.
It seemed to work.
Afterwords I saw a message in my event viewer however that said that some of my memory
is being used by something in a another or substitute registry and that it would be released if needed.
Also my comp is now listed in Event Viewer as Desktop 2

If I look at my task manager right now under Performance /Physical Memory/ it tells me that I have
a Total of 1048052
Available 735948
System Cache 197488
Is this normal?
My comp seems to work fine and I dont want to worry about nothing,Im just curious

I have 20 start-up items loading (just the bare minimum) and as I write this only this web site and the task manager open.

Also 1 more question: If I use System Restore to roll back to fix a problem and it doesnt fix the problem, can I then bring
it back to the present day without screwing anything up?

20 startup items is your bare minimum?!

Start->Run: msconfig

I don't think you can undo system restore; ie: come back to present day, check the MS knowledge Base.

You can use system-restore to undo the last restore operation you performed, but I wouldn't bother because its likely it will only compound the problems your having. The issue is that system restore won't remove most virus's or malware & in fact that type of application will often hide withing restore data & re-infect your system wether you use it or not.

Do you have any antivirus or anti-spyware programs installed on your PC?

Just Kaspersky Anti-Virus and Spybot.
Ive tried turning off Kaspersky and the SpyBot was installed after the problem
started.
Ive started it in safe mode and it spikes.
I have used TweakNow registry cleaner and eliminated at least 60 or 70 bogus registry entries and it still spikes.
I have tried unplugging my modem, checking any and all task schedulars
or anything that might turn itself off or on and several Navajo prayers and
it still spikes.

I do have it overclock from 1.9 to 2.2 and the V-core from 1.6(auto) to 1.75
I dont remember seeing this after I O.Cd.
Actually my comp runs great except for the spike.
Its just driving me batty trying to get rid of it.

It does sound like you have some kind of malware infection on your PC & its very likely you'll end up being forced to format & re-install, however I suggest you first disable system restore & then try a couple different online virus scanners to see if one of them can snag it ... I've had the best results with Trend Micro ... while there you should also download & run Hijack This & take a look at everything running in your PC.

Heres a couple more:

Bitdefender online scan

F-Secure online scan

Download and run "Hijackthis", which will list all the processes running on the pc, as well as browser helper objects (possible spyware) and other elements that might be causing problems:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.p...0&evp=4122712c2af084c815e5fd4f2b249d83

Choose the System Scan and Logfile option. This will scan the system, and then pop up a text file in notepad. Copy/paste the results of your hijackthis scan here, and we'll take a look.

I just noticed this statement again. 4 percent? That's really nothing in cpu terms. I just opened my own task manager. My cpu is registering 2-4 percent every few seconds. There's certainly nothing unusual about that. The computer is constantly polling applications and services, caching, etc., which takes cpu time. Even having task manager open will register a couple of percent every couple of seconds as task manager takes its own readings.

If you really meant "40" percent, that's another story. In that case, I would open task manager and sort by "CPU". Click the CPU column until you see "System Idle Process" at the top of the list. Then, watch these "spikes" you are mentioning and see what process is causing them. Whatever it is will jump to the top of the list momentarily.

Re: your Hijackthis file...it's mostly clean except for the couponbar entries, which I assume you downloaded out of choice. You also have the remnants of a Trojan Downloader in your Hijackthis file. If you look in the "BHO" section, you'll see a couple of entries that say "O2 - BHO: (no name)" and end with "(no file)".

Run Hijackthis again, and put a checkmark in the boxes next to those two entries and click the Fix button on the bottom. That will remove those two from the registry. Reboot and rerun Hijackthis to ensure those two entries are gone.

Thank you Slikkster.
I did as you said and the 2 BHO entries are gone.
I just noticed that my Task Manager update speed was set to HIGH.
I set it at NORMAL and now my cpu spikes are 1% every few seconds.
I guess thats well, normal.
The reason I was concerned is that it used to idle at 0% usage
and then I got a the explorer.exe malware curse and when I finally got rid of it I started noticing the 4% spike and figurerd I had'nt got rid of all of it.
Thank You again
