It appears that you have a corupted system restore function, there is a good chance that you have permanently lost the ability to restore to a previous restore point. Obviously you are having problems and are thinking about taking the short cure, rather than deal with an unknown malfunction...been there...done that. If this is the case, bite the bullet and attack the new problem, then fix your sys restore function. I have recently fixed my sys restore using the following method, but alas, lost my restore points that were corupted anyways.
First off, try to make a new resrore point to determine if your sys restore is working at all, if it is..then just make a new restore point [ after fixing your sys of course ]. To fix the sys restore function, go to control panel, administrative tools, services, scroll down to system restore service..double click it..change start up type to DISABLED, click APPLY, then reboot your sys, go all the way back to the system restore service again, double click, change start up type to manual, then go back to control panel..system..click the system restore tab..then un-check..turn off system restore on all drives..click apply..then..hopefully..heh..your sys restore will work again. Hope this helps.
