The remake of System Shock has a Pre-Alpha Demo on Steam, as the company is trying to drum up interest for their kickstarter to fund the project.

The release date is aiming for Dec 2017.

I've only played for a few minutes, but they've captured the look, sound and general atmosphere.... imo....

So, I have to pay for it? If that's the case, no thanks. I'm not a moron investor.

Will certainly be looking at the feedback for it though.

Not bad... though, I did manage to crash (well, not a hard crash, I just lost all gfx and it went to the desktop in a empty window. I had to alt-F4 it) it right after I bashed the robot.
I picked up a few limbs as well.
At least some stuff is destructible.

I never played the 1st SS only second and love that game. I am very interested in playing this one.

Is this the first demo since 90s???

I played the first, but the controls were clunky as hell (no mouselook, huge HUD, etc). This is probably one of the few old 90's games that genuinely does need a remake for playability reasons other than the usual franchise cash-in.

They already did a playability update.

DRM free, has things like mouselook... you can either play classic (no mouselook/etc) or enhanced (mouselook/etc).

In celebration of the game's 21st anniversary, this new edition includes polished graphics and a resolution boost "up to 1024x768 and 854x480 widescreen mode", adds mouselook support, and remappable keys (including three preset profiles: original, custom and left-handed).

it seems pretty good.

but does it have to be a shot for shot remake? I would rather a reboot sort of like what Doom 3 did for the original Doom.

Thought I'd chime in and say as a fan of the original I played the demo and really enjoyed it; I'm excited to back this one. The Kickstarter for this game is now running (but can't be linked here) if anyone wants to back - it's doing pretty well, but it'd be nice to hit some stretch goals.

Re the shot-for-shot remake comment, it looks like it will (especially if stretch goals are hit) have some expansion in various areas.

We already got our reboot with Bioshock. I'd prefer a roughly shot for shot remake in this case, especially given how old it is. They could stand to CAREFULLY clean up / rebalance many of the game mechanics, but I don't think there should be any drastic changes.

I agree with GoodRevrnd in that cleaning up some of the game mechanics and rebalancing some of the things would be good. Also clean up the environment a bit. My issue with Citadel Station is that it just looks like a bunch of hacked together storage containers, but you can keep the same layout and map, but remove the storage container look.

With that all said, if they do well with this project, you know they're gonna remake SS2, right? Oh man that would be amazing.

From what I have read there are some significant IP hurdles involved with trying to do a System Shock 2 remaster. I believe Electronic Arts still holds the IP rights to that game.

ControlD, I believe that's outdated information. EA let the System Shock license lapse (thank the maker!) after a dispute with the other IP property owner, Meadowbrook Insurance, a subsidiary of Star Insurance, and Nightdive swooped in and acquired it (I believe they have everything now). =) That's what allowed them to rerelease System Shock as the Enhanced Edition, rerelease System Shock 2 to work with modern machines, do this remake, and also give OtherSide Entertainment (Warren Spector's company) the license to do System Shock 3! So a System Shock 2 remaster definitely shouldn't be out of the question!

This has been funded by the way, but still a lot of stretch goals (some of which are hidden) to go!

No problem, ControlD! I remember a few years back looking into it and getting super depressed because it really seemed System Shock was lost in a limbo between EA and that insurance company and there'd never be another. So glad that didn't turn out to be the case and the license is in hands that are both excited to have it and going to try to actually do interesting things with it!

just tried the demo and it's pretty nice, even if it uses Unity I don't have to many complains about how it looks and runs, and the game seems pretty interesting, the potential is there, as someone who never played the original I'm now looking forward to playing this one.

also an interview with the guy behind it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyBkTm20pys

Very enjoyable interview - I like that they seem very passionate, but with a clear idea of what they want to do and staying realistic instead of promising things they don't think they can commit to right now (like VR).

It's approaching the last few days of the KickStarter (it's funded, but there are some really cool stretch goals yet to be reached), so if you haven't already, try out the demo and if you like it, back if you can! =) Would link but KS links aren't allowed - easily findable tho'!
