System Time is always wrong! What's the problem?

I have an old 200Mhz pc that runs on win2000. Everything is fine except for one thing...the system time in the bottom right of the desktop. If I shut down the computer, the time will not change and will stay the same until i turn back on the computer. I thought it might have been the battery on the motherboard and i changed it, but still did not fix the problem. Any suggestions of what the problem might be?

Strange problem indeed! No time movement at all if you shut down your `puter...? If you boot the computer and go into BIOS, has the time moved there? Anything in your eventlogs that could give you a hint?

how long does that little battery in the motherboard last? does it "recharge"? you know what I am talking about right? it is that lithium/ cell battery? My old p166 mb hd it

Does that have something to do with keeping alive the system clock when its turned off?

A weak battery can hold the time without advancing it. Get a new one if it's much more than 1-2 years old because it generally lasts only 3-4 years. All motherboards now use a lithium cell, but older ones usually have a nicad soldered in permanently, and it needs to be charged every month, but nicads spoil after a few years anyway. Don't try charging a lithium cell because very few of them are made for it and will instead rupture or even explode.

Okay, i'll buy a new lithium battery this weekend and see if this is the cause of the problem.
