Any ideas? The last system I built was a AMD 939 w/ 2.4Ghz Processor, now I've been completely out of the loop for a while. Any advice?

I'd like to play @ 1920xWhatever

I figure

Case ~$100 - Lian Li of somekind
Used Power Supply - N/A
Ram - 4GBs $100 DDR 2
HD - Already have a Raptor
Video Card - $300? AMD?
Processor - Intel something?
Motherboard - whatevers cheap

This really isn't solely video related, I'm moving this to general hardware.

Building a system to perform well for a game that is not out is not a smart move.

Isn't fallout3 for Xbox only?

xbox, ps3 and pc that I know of.

I would wait and see the reviews for it. I expect many sites will review the game.

Or yoou could buy a ps3. Considerably cheaper then a pc. Not sure what other titles you want to play though.

Arma2 and that new Brothers In Arms game...

Both games I think are suppose to be coming with-in a few months.

I've come up with this from newegg

Processor C2D E8400 3.0Ghz - $170
Lian LI Case or Antec Case - $100
Power PC and Cooling - $150
Video Card - ATI 4870 (not sure if this is enough) $250
CD-ROM/DVD - From OLD PC

Total - $670

Plus, I still need memory and a mobo. I don't care about overclocking, is the p45 chipset the budget one? I don't need a bunch of extra features and stuff.

Your current system could likely play it with a video card upgrade.
Better off getting a 4870x2 by itself and forgoing the rest of the upgrades I think.

Good choices...

Here's a decent mobo and 4GB DDR2 1066 RAM that would complement that nicely.

The game is NOT an Xbox exclusive, it will be on the PC (PC and Xbox versions will launch at the same time).

is the p45 chipset the budget one?
That would be the P43.

The P45 is performance single card (1 X PCI-E 16x or 2 X PCI-E 8x for crossfire).
The x48 is performance for crossfire (2 X PCI-E 16x)

Building a system to perform well for a game that is not out is not a smart move.
I agree, wait for the game to be released and read the reviews / performance evaluations.

Because it is a console based game, I think there is going to be a framecap on the game. Because SO FAR, the game has only been demoed and show on the 360, not the PS3 or PC. I dont know if getting the biggest and best hardware will matter, but then again, look at the strain Oblivion can still put on a system.

GameSpot places the estimated release date for Fallout 3 on October 28, 2008 and Brother's in Arms : Hell's Highway on September 23, 2008. You should put together a system when the games are out because by that time prices will have come down. By September 23rd there should be 55nm GTX series, possibly 216 pipeline GTX260 card, 4850 X2. By October 28, possibly i7 Intel cpu. Also, sometimes games get delayed (HL2 anyone?).

I'm sure you could disable it...

So far I've got

Case - Undecided, kinda curious if I could jam this into a small HTPC case
Power - Power PC and Cooling ?
Motherboard - MSI P43 Neo3-F - $82.99
Memory - 2x2Gb ??? Should I just get DDR2 800? $100?
Processor - E8400 C2D Woldsdale 3.0Ghz - $170
Video Card - Powercolor 4870 512MB - $250 with MIR
HD - Raptor from old pc
CD - From old pc

so im looking at

$100(case /w power), $83(mobo), $100(Ram), $170(proc), $250(graphics)

~$703

Though, I'm still kind of disappointed with the performance of the 4870 is anything coming out in Sept-Oct? If not I'll probably just buy now

Disappointed with the performance how? It's one of the fastest single gpu cards out at the moment slower than the GTX280 and at about a draw with the GTX260 so how is that a dissapointment? You want better performance get a SLI/Xfire setup or a dual gpu card. You mention a PCP&P PSU so you will most likely have enough juice for all of the dual gpu cards, think about one of those.

It's not going to play Crysis at ~30fps at 1920x1080i, I doubt it'll stand up to any new games coming out. Arma2, BiA, etc

Crysis is an unusually poor example for ATI cards. Generally, the hd4870 is in the same ballpark as the gtx 260, but it's possible to find edge cases (similar to crysis) where the hd4870 outperforms even the gtx 280.
