system won't power on

Hi

So a new system I'm trying to put together won't power on. When I hit the power switch, the psu makes a high pitched noise for a split second and then nothing happens. Hitting the power switch again doesn't make any noise until I flip the psu off and back on, and then it makes the high pitched noise again. The only components I have plugged in are the following:

Asus A8N-E mobo (brand new)
AMD64 3200+
1x512mb Corsair ValueSelect
ATI x800xl
OCZ GameXstream 600w PSU (brand new)

If it wasn't for the high pitched noise, I'd think there was a problem with the case's power switch. The LED on the mobo lights up just fine when the psu is on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and if there is any useful information I left out, let me know.

Start backwards by removing everything non-essential to powering on the PC.

If the PC turns on (you get hardware beeps), then start adding components 1 by 1.

Troubleshooting is fun, ain't it?

IMO, the PSU is fvcked. If you have a spare, try using it.

Thanks for the reply edblor. As I said in the OP, I did remove everything non-essential to powering on the machine. As for the PSU, the OCZ is brand new. I got it because my old PSU, an Antec True Power 480W was doing this same thing. I suppose its possible that my OCZ psu was DOA, but I'm not sure. Anyone else have any ideas? Thanks.

Interesting....I also had the Antec True Power 480 and recently my system has died. I thought I had it narrowed down as a mobo failure, but maybe I should try swapping the PSU. What symptoms did you have that lead you to discover it was the PSU? The problem I am having is that when I power the system on, I don't get a post and the monitor is blank. My fans power up and it seems the hard drives have power, but nothing else. I've swapped out the RAM, CPU, and Video.

wow, I'm having the EXACT same problem in a system currently being rebuilt. No video, no post errors, everything gets power...just sits there. hmmm...

Plug in some speakers, the A8N should have the voice post reporter telling you what is failing the post

Thank you everyone for the input. To clarify one thing, I'm not actually getting any power to my system. None of the fans spin up at all.

mcurphy: I'm still not sure that the problem is with the PSU. The fact that my mobo doesn't seem to get any power seems to imply that it is, but after trying two different mobos and two different PSUs and still not getting anything I'm starting to have some doubts. Perhaps both mobos or both PSUs are dead.

Am I right to believe that its not the RAM or CPU. If it was, wouldn't the mobo power up and then fail when it tried to detect the faulty component?
