Systemic racism in Olympic coverage?

This occurred to one of my friends earlier -
Last night, the US swept all three medals in the women's 100m hurdles. Gold, Silver, Bronze. First time in US history.
Last night, the US got a bronze in women's beach volleyball.

Guess which story gets more press coverage:
"2 cute blondes win Olympic bronze medals"
"3 young black girls win gold, silver, bronze"

If the BLM used something like this to show systemic racism, I think they'd get a lot more sympathy and understanding than when they use a case where a man aiming a gun at police is shot.

(Of course, the 4 swimmers lying about the robbery is now marginalizing all the other stories in news feeds.)

I don't know.

My news feeds this morning were filled with the American sweep in the hurdles. I didn't know the beach volleyball team won until I read your post.

If anything that was a major choke job not getting the gold in volleyball.

It could be racism. Or it could be that hurdles is a stupid shitty sport that no one should care about ever.

Winner of the 100m: I'm the fastest man/woman in the world!

Winner of the 110m hurdles: I'm the fastest man/woman in the world that has to jump every 15 strides!

From the media reports I have seen/heard, the hurdles sweep clearly was the top story.

I have heard a LOT about the women's gymnastics and women's track teams, which are both quite diverse. If there is anything here, I think it's more "sex sells," not racism.

Eh...Kerri Walsh is a bit of an olympics legend. She was going for her 4th olympic gold in the same event and fell short. That was kind of a big thing too.

This is always true, but you can't really argue that "women" gymnasts are sexy unless you're selling to pedophiles. After the first week of heavy gymnastics and swimming coverage, the female track athletes not only look athletic, but pretty feminine as well.

As to the OP's question, Americans in general don't pay much attention to track & field. I couldn't even tell you that the last World Championships were in Beijing (right?) without looking it up; and that meet is held every two years. Not to say beach volleyball is currently a mainstream sport (like it arguably was in the early 1990s) but those pros are at least reasonably popular and known domestically.

Not everything is "racist" IMO. And Kerri Walsh isn't bad looking but I would not personally call that team "two cute blondes."

First off, there were no 2 "cute" blonds. One is extremely unattractive, one is decent but way over the hill.
Lets not try to find racism in everything, where it doesn't exist.

I saw the late 1st set and 2nd set of volleyball last night and after Team USA lost the first set (3 sets in a row including the last game they lose) and Brazil was up on 2nd set. I thought the two blondies would be a goner but they did claw back to win the 2nd set and then the 3rd one to win. Not bad to watch and the Brazil team fought them tooth and nail.

Racism? Was the story about the black female runner dived ahead to win the gold in the front pages of almost all the new sources, especially social media a couple days ago?

Also, one of the US female shooter (white) won a gold medal in shooting yet almost nothing about her winning while NBC run almost non stop stories about Simone Biles this and Simon that. Systematic reverse racism?

This - plus olympic coverage in the US sucks unless you only care about gymnastics and swimming and the one or two outliers like Kerri. Lots of US olympians have gotten gold but little to no overall coverage. I was watching coverage while Kyla Herrison got Judo gold and didn't hear or see anything about it until the next morning, Instead it was swimming qualifiers coverage

I love how SJW people these days have to sit down and try to analyze news bits piece by piece and try to find broad strokes of correlating racism in an attempt to construct news feeds however your mind wants to deem them.

It's both sad and pathetic, yet not surprising.

your comment is discriminatory towards people that don't like discrimination.

SJWs gonna SJW. Finding events that fit their confirmation bias (regardless of truth) is literally hijacking their brain chemistry the same way as in a cocaine addict. They get off on perceived injustices.

Racism not found myself, seems more like some editor deciding which story is going to get more hits wherever their market is really.

Yeah, the swimmers being retained is going to be grabbing most of the headlines atm I'd think.

A lot of media had always been about sensational/controversial stories of course. Is the name of the game there.

The whole SJW outrage of many topics is along the same lines of reality shows when they started myself. I'm far from saying there are not a issue, but they tend to get blown way out of proportion in many cases these days.

It's not like GamerGate rates anywhere near a lot of issues like police corruption.

Who would have thought a thousand year old Greek event might be less than politically correct.....

I heard & saw more coverage today of the gold/silver/bronze sweep today than the volleyball story.
