They're probably scared it will turn into another pyramid scheme like social security.

Pictures aside, the text you shared with us is only partially correct; the portion missing is that both major political parties have dipped into the Social Security fund for their own agendas and programs, effectively robbing S.S. of the much of the funding put into it. This is part of what is referred to as "unfunded liabilities" meaning we (collectively) are committed to paying out these funds but do not have the funds to cover the payouts, which is why the 16.7 Trillion dollar number is in fact only PART of the total debt we have to eventually re-pay.

What do you mean nothing will happen?

We will go through Oct. 17th with no deal. Aliens will invade the 19th, seeing the world weaker because one of its top countries couldn't pay a debt. November 3rd, after the resistance has scared off the aliens to go for reinforcements,(only after 50% of earth's population has been killed) God will come down and reflood the earth for a few months. Now because we are much more advanced than those biblical people, we will have most survive via ships and intelligence.

This will cause God to throw a 1/3 earth monster sized Asteroid at the planet to destroy it as punishment for avoiding his punishment for failing to pay a silly debt. However, SURPRISE we have Superman. He will just punch it into millions of tiny pieces and as they enter the atmosphere, turn into skittles, so we, as a people can taste the rainbow.

That is what will happen if nothing happens. We will taste the rainbow.
LOL +1

It's very detailed and it's on the Internet, so it must be true.

Actually it goes to show how angry the general public is with govt in it's entirety. A lot of people are beginning to realize that both parties just play games to get elected. That none of the people in power are willing to compromise regardless of whether or not it's better for the country.

The reality is nobody in power right now has the general population approval between people just giving up on voting or in general hating our govt as awhole. All of DC is a complete shit storm these days and it's laughable how both parties push their agenda. You can't fix the problems we have with the agenda either party pushes but nobody wants to give up anything right now. And that's the problem with these career politicians. They have a small rabid support base - BOTH republican and democrat - and they just vote a certain way to get elected again - doesn't matter if it's good for the country or not.

At this point I've stopped caring for the most part because neither party is willing to do what's needed to fix this country. Both parties would have to do things they don't like.

Also for everyone else in this thread, even if we miss the debt ceiling limit today it won't matter until November 1. That's the first big payment we would not be able to make. So we have two weeks before it matters.
Well said. I'd only add that it's not just the parties who have to do things they don't want to do, it's we the people as well.

1. The current BS in washington will not cause a crash.
2. QE and artificially low interest rates for the past 5 years will cause a crash.

It's already too late to prevent the crash, so the next best thing is to attempt to time the crash and point fingers. The republicans probably thought they could get support through the shutdown then blame the inevitable crash on the democrats. Polls show that the American public are mostly against the republicans for stonewalling the debt ceiling, so the crash will be blamed on the republicans even though the crash has nothing to do with the shutdown.

It's merely a coincidence that Ben is stepping down as the fed chairman, right after the markets hit all time highs and indicators are showing signs of possible S&P reversal:
-50 day moving average has negative concavity
-50 day moving average has flattened out
-price has dropped below the supports
-MACD is showing weaker rallies at each new peak; roughly 25 in May, 19 in July, 13 in September
-Shiller PE Ratio is something like 24 right now (very high)

I think I previously predicted a crash around March or April of 2014. It's just a guess.
How dare you intimate that we can't simply will money into existence and prosper on it forever! Next you'll be saying we can't simply continue borrowing more money every year to make our interest payments, you crazy person!

No. Basically every single fiscal policy that the Dems and GOP disagree on is because the GOP policy is bad for the country. Please point to a single Democrat fiscal policy that Republicans didn't like that has been bad for the nation. Not "will be" bad, demonstrably "has been" bad.

Places like Detroit have problems that neither D nor R can solve. R policies would make things much worse, which is why R has such a hard time winning urban votes. Republicans demonize poverty as merely the result of laziness. It is baked into all of their policies. Why would poor people ever vote for them?
So we should ignore all R policies and adopt only D policies until, what, 1/2 our country has become Detroit, all our country has become Detroit, or what?

Pyramid scheme? What's a pyramid? Is this a pyramid?

How about this?

So the answer, as every single thinking person has to know, is to reform Medicare and Social Security, not just throw them out. Unfortunately, the same fear-of-voter-backlash that has prevented House non-Tea-Party Republicans from coming up with a rational CR and not engaging in debt-ceiling brinkmanship has also prevented Democrats and Republicans in both the Senate and House from enacting meaningful reforms.

The essential problem is that although many people want government to be smaller, they just don't want THEIR slice of government to be smaller.

Will this era become known in 50 - 100 years from now as THE DARK AGES VER 2.0?
A small minority radical group has the power to cause the dumbing down of America.
They reject climate change. Reject science. Reject logic. Reject environmental protections. Reject the benefits of education. Believe in invisible powers, or their version of the occult also known as far right fundamentalist religion. Reject humanitarian causes. Reject morals. Embrace racism and bigotry.

So, considering their damage just to the field of science by defunding scientific research, or the long term damage by defunding government agencies like the FDA, EPA and endangering the health of all citizens, will this tea party era also become known as the second DARK AGES of society?

Pretty much looks that way. That is, if we survive 50 years with this bunch.

BTW... The government WILL default. The shutdown WILL continue. Simply because THAT is why this small minority holding such great power over the vast majority wants it exactly this way.
This was their goal.
Rejoice! The loonies are in charge.

The dark ages were brought about by the complete collapse of the western Roman empire, both economically and militarily. The plague in 541 didn't help either but Britain, Gaul, and Roman Germany were already mostly lost by that point.

Overly dramatic analogy much?
