T-bird / HSF / thermal compound installation questions

Hi,
I just received a T-bird 1.33 processor, a Volcano II hsf and the Arctic Silver II thermal compound. I'm a little unclear on what I'm supposed to do, after reading the instructions on arcticsilver.com. They say only this compound should be between the CPU core and the heat sink.. However the processor has 4 rubber "feet" that maintain a gap between the hsf and the processor core. Should I remove these four feet? Is the processor supposed to come into contact with the heat sink?

Leave the feet. The heatsink comes in contact with the processor core (the raised thingie in the middle of the chip), not the entire chip. The feet keep you from crushing the core with your heatsink.

The feet will be compressed by the spring on the HS, leave them on.

Squeeze a very small amount onto the core of the CPU. Grab a plastic sandwich bag, stick one finger in it, & use that to spread it evenly and very thin. Put the HS on & call it good.

Thanks guys, it didn't occur to me that the feet would compress under the springload once the the HSF is installed. Is it crucial to remove the current yellow thermagon "interface material" on the heat sink base with isopropyl or nail polish remover (both of which would require a trip to the local pharmacy)?

The 'yellow thermagon "interface material"' will only decrease the overall thermal conductivity of your HSF and thermal compound so I would remove it.

I've done this before and it works pretty well. A packing peanut dabbed on the core works too! Just remember NOT to use your finger! Skin oils and other "stuff" will interfere with the transfer characteristics of AS.

Cheers!

What do you consider an adequate, mainstream HSF for it that's available in Canada?

the Volcano II will suffice, its nice and quiet and thats why I am getting one. Don't expect to do much overclocking though. The day my 1.2 ghz athlon starts to feel slow, i'll throw some huge copper heatsink at it and overclock it but for now it will stay at default and quiet (I sleep 3 feet away from my PC)
