T-Mobile changed plan costs

Last month T-Mobile increased the cost of text messaging from 5 cents to 10 cents per message. Since text messaging is an included part of the typical T-Mobile basic pack (you can't have it taken off), they legally have to allow you the option to opt-out of your contract (if the contract you signed was 5 cents per message, not 10). There should be a statement about it in your last bill, or upcoming bill (fine print, hidding somewhere obscure), giving you 30 days to cancel without any penalty. You could also call customer service.

Based off feedback at Howardforums, most people are cancelling without problem, though there are a few clueless reps around.

Now I just need to find a new carrier to switch to...

Um, everyone else is pretty much at .10 now AFAIK. You can buy 300 txt messages for your plan for $3, 400 for $4, or 1000 for $10. (I'm doing the 1000 one)

I think this is just an opt out for peole that want to switch companies, new phone, or change rate plans without penalty.

Exactly. At this point, aside from Verizon's "IN" plan, all the major carriers are charging about the same (though I think Cingular gives free incoming).

Your subtitle implies negativity about T-Mobile. You should change it to something like "Way to opt-out of T-Mobile contract". I've never had any problems with it and it's far and away 100x better than my old Sprint service, and destroys Cingular at least here in the Dallas area.

Verizon has free incoming if they are verizon customers I believe.
USCellular has free incoming too I believe.

Contract will be done.. no month to month. They will sometimes let you decide what exact month th cancel the contract. You may tell the CSR to note your account so that your number can be ported. Of course, YMMV.

I tried to cancel my contract. The girl who answered the phone indicated that I cannot cancel my contract because text messaging is something I pay for only if I choose to do it. And that I could only cancel if the price of my plan went up. I told her that I receive text messages and that's not my choice, and she said I would just have to ask those people to stop. Doesn't seem right, since the folks at Howard Forums don't seem to have an issue canceling.

I've been a T-Mobile customer for some time now and frankly that increase wouldn't affect me as I'm already puchasing the 300 text message a month service.

If I find a good "new" customer deal out there that offers the Razor, I'll consider this free op-out opportunity.

I'd actually like to know if anybody gets offered free stuff for calling and asking to disconnect. The man I spoke to didn't seem to care much about me or his job, and we arranged for my number to be ported out within 2 weeks. Looking back I wonder if I could have scored some free service, a free phone, or something.

I have t-mobile and i use the "Unlimited Text and/or Instant Messaging ($9.99)" package

Don't you guys have this option in your account prefs?

I text all the time because its much more convenient during classes, or when I just have somethin quick to ask.... I save a bunch with that package over switching to another company and having to pay per text.

Unlimited is where its at.

i dont text messages at all except for the occasional one from a friend. If i get any spam messages and get charged for them ill be cancelling my service pretty damn promptly. I'm not paying an extra $10 a month on top of the $50 I'm already being charged a month just so i can get the "unlimited messages", I'd rather switch to a provider that didnt try this crap.

i dunno whether this makes me glad that sprint continues with historical plans or not. on the one hand, it makes it easy to get out of the contract, on the other hand, getting your service cancelled and having to switch providers blows.

Just imagine how much money they are making by charging 10 cents a message, that's almost what you pay per minute on a monthly plan (for the minutes that are included) and I can't believe that it would actually cost that much in data or infrastructure to justify that type of charge for texting. And more often than not, you usually wind up texting a few times for the conversation, even if its just a quick one. Amazing how prices just keep going up.

A) It's industry standard - $.10.

B) If you actually use text messages on a regular basis you get a plan or an option for text messages at the above rates I quoted.
