but one thing we have to love about tmobile is they only sign you one year contract for a nice free phone instead of cingular's 2yr.

I have one VirginMobile. It was .10 to send text, receving was free; last months, it changed to .05 to send, .05 to receive. It looks like more money in text message than we know.

I still have an old AT&T plan and they don't charge for incoming texts. I don't understand why something hasn't been done about this. You can choose not to pick up a phone call, but you can't stop a text message. People shouldn't be charged for this. At the very least, they should allow you to disable text messaging. I have a group of friends who I've told repeatedly not to text me. But come some New Year or Christmas holiday months down the line in comes a whole bunch because people just mass text message each other.

Man, this would be awesome if I can get out of my tmobile contract with this. I pay $100 a month for 3 phones. Now my work supplies me with a phone, and starting next month my wifes work is giving her one. It would be nice to save that $100 a month. Has anyone succesfully tried this? Who do you have to talk to?

It makes me glad and sad. I've had a Sprint contract of 2000 minutes/free n+w, unlimited vision, unlimited text, and three phones for $100 for a few years now. While it makes me glad that I have a pretty good deal, it sucks in that it's so good that I basically would have to pay more if I ever switched to another carrier, since everything is a-la-carte now. (text and net, etc.) I don't even use one of my phones (used to be my bros) but it would save me zero dollars even if I removed the line.

I don't want to pay $100/mo for a cell plan, but if I add up unlimited net + SMS to a 2-line plan with any carrier, with at least 800 mins/mo I end up back over what I'm paying now.

For those who keep sending unasked for text messages that cost you money, you know that most phone companies have online forms to send a text message for free? Maybe think about sending them a few from the web

Does anyone use SMS text messaging for international?

Prob with the package plans I've run in to is that despite having a package plan, they bill international messages (both incoming and outgoing) separately.

quick question on cancelling my existing contract. i signed up my plan in a local cell phone shop that offered free phones. I had signed a 1yr agreement with the cell phone shop stating that i was going to stay with tmobile for the year or otheriwse the price of the cell phones will fall back to me. In my case, if i had cancelled with tmobile, what will happen to the contract i have with the cell phone company??

So wait...didn't it used to cost 5 cents to receive 5 to send? Now it costs 10 cents to receive and 5 cents to send or free to send or 10 cents to send?

Every time my wife wants a new phone she just calls and threatens to cancel her contract. They patch her into a supervisor and give her a free phone. I just wish I could cancel my contract and go month to month until a new deal comes out for a free PDA phone w/t-mobile.

Thanks for the tip OP!

I just got off the phone with T-mobile and had no trouble getting out of my contract. The conversation went something like this:
Called the 800 number
Rep who answered didn't know about it, so I got transferred
New person I spoke to said price changes for text msg is true and then tried to tell me since it's not yet effective (28 Feb), it doesn't really affect me...I still said I want to get out of the contract
Then asked if there was any other problems for me to cancel and tried real hard to keep me (give me 300 text msg/mo for old cost of 2.99)
Then asked me how I found out about it (insert that was in my bill, friend, where ever)...that question was kinda funny
Tried again to keep me, but finally said ok and that I could cancel my contract with no early termination fee.
Told them I wanted to port it over and said oh, that's different than canceling the contract so I had to wait a few minutes for him to update the system.

I'm ready to change services!!!

2 things to note!!!!
First, if you cancel, they will shut off your service!!! If you are planning on moving to a different company, let them know you are going to port over your phone number!
Second, they know when they sent the bill out with the "insert" and then told me that I have 30 days from the day they sent it out (23 Jan for me), so I need to port over my phone by 23 Feb or I will be charged the early termination fee!!!

Good luck!

If anyone cares, they have a buy one get one free RAZR deal for new customers right now ($500 - $250 MIR). My contract had already expired so I called them to see what kind of deal they could give me. I ended up getting two new RAZRs for $149 shipped to me.

Um, everyone else is pretty much at .10 now AFAIK. You can buy 300 txt messages for your plan for $3, 400 for $4, or 1000 for $10. (I'm doing the 1000 one)

I think this is just an opt out for peole that want to switch companies, new phone, or change rate plans without penalty.

Exactly. At this point, aside from Verizon's "IN" plan, all the major carriers are charging about the same (though I think Cingular gives free incoming).

I have cingular and they charge for incoming txt... bastards.... lol

And that I could only cancel if the price of my plan went up. I told her that I receive text messages and that's not my choice, and she said I would just have to ask those people to stop. Doesn't seem right, since the folks at Howard Forums don't seem to have an issue canceling.

should've responded with, well i'd like to, but i have no idea who's sending me txt messages and you won't help me block it.

I tried, but the pulled up my contract and basically said that my contract says that I am subject to any rate changes for things not regarding my normal monthly charges, INCLUDING text messaging...

Anyone know a way around that?
