T40p running a custom install of WinXP Pro SP1a, DX9.0a

I've tried playing ut2k3 and u2 on 1400x1050x32, high detail. Both games run smoothly enough to be enjoyable.

3DMark2001 SE, Test: MOBILITY FIRE GL 9000, 1400x1050x32, 4xFSAA.

Awesome! Looks like the FireGL version is quicker than the Radeon 9000 version based on nicowju's score.

Azazello mentioned that he would post a comparable result for his Radeon 9000 equipped unit when it arrives. I just hope its the same cpu.

I guess we'll know which unit is better for gaming soon.

No, Resh, mine will be a 1.3GHz one. I don't believe there will be a huge difference due to that, though. Certainly not as much as that due to less VRAM.

lothix, could you please run a 3dmark01 test using the standard settings, 1024x768x32, no aa.

azazello, I did not know that they made a t40 with 1.3ghz and radeon9000 (not firegl), are you sure it's not the radeon7500 you are getting, or the 1.5ghz ? Edit: Never mind, I found it.

does anyone anyone know if these games are smooth with the T40 - 2373-92U model (what nicowju has) which has the 32MB ATI Radeon Mobility 9000?
( I think these tests were run at different resolutions but i am not sure) - lothix: what res did you run your test at?

azazello,

Thanks for clarifying. I can't wait to see the results so I can place my order!

IMO the most notable shortcoming of the T40 is its poorly designed locking mechanism.

Thanks.

Almost 7500, seems ok to me, a little more than a normal Radeon 9000 64mb. But the 5000 at 1400x1050 WITH 4aa seemed very impressive to me.

Great information guys.

I do have one question - what drivers are you guys using? I assumed that the ATI Catalysts worked, but they don't - so are you guys using the IBM's?

Also, is there any way to control OpenGL options? On my old nVidias I could turn off AA and VSync and I'd like to see what I can optimize with this card.

lothix,

Which drivers are you using? IBM-supplied or ATI Reference for FireGL boards?

Thanks!

I am using the newest release ATI Catalysts. I installed them manually (i.e. via the .inf file, not via the ATI installer) and they work fine.

I think for the above testing, Lothix was using the latest IBM-supplied drivers.

Thanks, guys for responding!

I have a ThinkPad T40P and have so far been pretty disappointed with its performance in 3D.
Since my 3DMark score is well in the 6500+ range on 1024x768x32bit, I am wondering if it is because the games I have been speed-testing are OpenGL - Return to Castle Wolfenstein. In any case, how much of an improvement would I see reformating the machine? I haven't done it because this alone was making me wonder about a return...

Anything else I could have forgotten?

(Sorry, I'm not familiar with this board and I didn't see an edit button anywhere...)

Also, how can I get the OpenGL properties to open up? I'd like to remove all AA and newfangled things to get a more accurate feel for performance.

So is it fair to say that the T40p (with fireGL) is quicker for gaming than the Radeon 9000-equipped T40? Or is it a function of drivers?

lothix, which driver did you use?

Here's what I put on before my benchmarks. I literally did nothing else, just installed this.

(1) OS - Windows XP Professional SP1a.
(2) Driver - Intel PRO/1000 MT Mobile from IBM - to go online to get rest of files.
(3) Driver - Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility from Intel - newer than IBM's version, but completely interchangable.
(4) Driver - Mobility Radeon FireGL 9000 Drivers from IBM.

3DMark 2001 SE Results

1024x768x32 with DirectX 8.1
6966

Tried forcing ATI Catalyst 3.4 drivers with little luck.
Tried forcing ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 drivers - 3DMark scores were around 5000.

Would be interesting to see a Radeon 9000 owner try a FireGL 9000 driver to see if there are improvements based on driver alone.
